Do you eat at the table?

For the most part, where do you eat? I have a table and chairs in the kitchen but it is seldom used. During Christmas or other evens, food may be placed on it but people serve themselves and eat on the sofa in front of the TV usually. For me, I have a small house and the kitchen is not the best place for me to eat as it's cold (crappy windows) and just not the most comfortable place. I don't think for the whole of 2019 I actually ate the table.

If I had a separate dining room I would definitely eat there more, most still see the majority of my meals being eaten in front of the TV.

I live with my wife and two children.

At the table in the kitchen. I actually often sit there even when not eating.

In a previous house we had a dining room, which was used less.

It is quite rare for us to eat in the living room.

Growing up we would eat in the living room, pulling the table they have close to the sofa for your plate.

I've never had a table. Tables and paraphernalia are an item that takes up space and costs money.... I've always said a table is the thin end of the wedge... as you need chairs, tablecloths, "best tablecloths", Xmas ones, placemats, "best", "Xmas", serving dishes, "best", "Xmas", then all sorts of impulse purchases for place settings and dishes .... then you might feel obliged to invite people round (£££ and effort). Then, where's it all going? All this stuff + the plates and cutlery.... you need a sideboard, more cost/space.... and that now needs dusting ... and some ornaments on top ....

    Don't buy a table :)

Pastures new your post made me laugh. I have friends who bought a lovely dining table and chairs they also bought a sideboard to keep "stuff" in.
I have a biological multi purpose "table". It is used as a book rest, computer shelf and was a cat bed. It's also called a lap.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

Kitchen table when it's just the two of us, dining room table (aka computer table) when we have guests.

So those without a table, where do you eat your Christmas dinner?

  • We've always had a table/eaten at it. When I had a rented (unfurnished) flat as a student I went out and purchased sofas, dining table, chairs and sideboard (all vintage/second hand). My bedroom furniture came from my parents' house.

When I met DH and we bought our own flat we took this stuff with us and although we didn't have a separate dining room or a kitchen that was large enough for a table, our living room had plenty of space. We made it our business to sit at the table for our evening meal most days.

Later we owned a series of houses with dining rooms and by about the third we had a kitchen with space for a table too. By that time we had DS and most meals were eaten at the kitchen table, with the dining room being used for frequent special occasions/entertaining.

Now it's just the two of us at home - in a considerably smaller cottage - we still have a table (just about to sell our second, more formal table) as well as an island that has four stools. Since just before Christmas the (kitchen) table is in the second reception room - not a dining room per se, but more of a library as it's where we read/play board games/I write - and we eat there on special occasions, as most days we sit at the island. Primarily this is because the kitchen has a wood burner so it's more of a winter room whereas I envisage we'll use the table more in the warmer months.....

Yep, we have a sideboard too..... housing lots of treasured crockery, glassware etc. Can't imagine a home without a table or our precious pieces, tbh :D

Breakfast and dinner always in the dining room at the table. Some standards shouldn't slip.

Only eat at the table if friends or family are round, but do sit at the table lots playing music, chatting and drinking. We'll spend all day there on a Sat then go sit on the sofa to eat :)
