Oh I agree, but the OP clearly had his heart set on Majorca and is preparing to toss it off all because of a few quid he has to pay when he gets there.
Well I am glad I tossed it off as now going to Menorca for £500 cheaper.

Don't mind the Tourist Tax, now I know it is correct!

Menorca is nice as is Lanzarote!
    Keep on trucking!

The witty comment was not yours, another poster!

I am amazed at the judgmental comments this post of mine has attracted.

I have thanked the helpful posters.

Having been to mainland Spain for the past four years, we have never paid or been asked to pay it. Seems that to date, they do not charge on the mainland
    Wrong.

The tourist tax for Menorca is the same as for Mallorca, so changing from one to the other is not saving you anything on that, regardless of the relative accommodation ratings.

As I said in my post, I am aware of the tourist tax, now.

I know I will be paying tourist tax at the Menorca hotel.

I am not wrong about me not paying the tax on my last four years of holidays in mainland Spain.
    Keep on trucking!

I'm surprised that having travelled for many years you've never come across this before. It's commonplace in many European countries and always, in my experience, paid at the hotel.

I think it should be introduced here. Local authorities have had their budgets slashed so much in recent years that they are finding it difficult to meet statutory obligations. A tourist tax would be ring fenced to help pay for the upkeep of historic buildings and other facilities.
  • Tenerife government vote against applying the Spanish Tourist Tax, so maybe a better choice for the OP.

Tourist tax is getting everywhere now. Ibiza introduced it about 4-5 years ago. Paris had it 7 years ago when I went. Barcelona has it too, so mainland Spain do have it, just in major cities where there are loads of tourists.

Glad you've found somewhere cheaper. On hotels.com and other sites in the small print at the bottom it does tell you what extra charges there are at the hotel, things like tourist tax, parking, breakfast, extra beds.etc

At least they told you before you booked!

I guess difficulty in including it in initial holiday price is that it is such a variable. Many factors can affect the rate - different areas of country, standard or size of hotel, maximum amount chargeable or simply government/local policy at time of holiday, etc.

Wherever you end up, enjoy - tax or no tax.

Your personal experience is not at issue, however you clearly stated that it did not apply on the mainland.
Seems that to date, they do not charge on the mainland
Which is incorrect in respect of Catalonia.

No big deal, just keeping the record straight.
