Tax to pay at the end of holiday.

Have just tried to book a holiday to Majorca.
I was just about to complete the booking when I saw an important message.
This message said that I had to a gree to pay an extra amount to the hotel at the end of my holiday. between 1 and 4 euros a day, per person.
I have never heard about this before.
Wondering why it isn't included in the holiday price. I am told by Jet 2 representative that the better the hotel, the more you pay.
Do you know if this is actually charged? Has anyone else have any knowledge or experience of this?

Yeah it's a local tourism tax that hotels charge adults. I've always paid in upon check in at the hotel.0

It's a tourist tax which was introduced a couple of years ago. It's starting to happen in a few places and as far as I know isn't included in the holiday price because it has to be paid directly to the hotel who then pass it on to government. Search 'Majorca tourist tax' for more information and actual cost which varies depending on type and standard of accommodation. I'm going to Greece later in the year and there the charge is 50 cents per night for self catering so will hardly break the bank.
Also, if you think it's bad in Majorca, many tourist centres in the USA add a 'resort fee' to their room rate. The highest I've seen is nearly $50 per night! That money doesn't go to the government it's just hotels screwing over their visitors. That is also payable locally and not included in brochure prices.0 -
I know that in the early 90's, this sort of tax was charged in Majorca. They then found out it wasn't legal to charge it, so it stopped.
On principle I don't feel like paying for a full priced holiday. to then have to pay extra. I might just wait to see if there are any cheap offers.
Thank you for responding.Keep on trucking!0 -
I can't believe you've backed out of a holiday 'on principle' because of a tax imposed by the country you're visiting.0

More & more countries are levying this type of tax, tourist tax, environmental tax, whatever they care to call it. I recall some while back it was suggested a similar charge be levied in the UK though it's not happened yet.
It isn't a huge amount in the grand scheme of things but even with a cheap deal there will still be a charge if that country levies one.0 -
Isn't Google a great friend to have ?
https://www.abc-mallorca.com/balearic-tourist-tax-doubles/
It has increased since first introduced in 2016, I think (not sure) it was doubled last year.
Nobody likes paying taxes, however this is one levy that is probably justifiable in light of the significant impact the huge tourist influx has on the Balearics.0 -
For a couple of Euros a day, you're backing out of a holiday?
How many times do you re-use a teabag?

If memory serves, Spanish VAT equivalent is lumped on at 10% - a tax upon a tax !!!
That's having a laugh !!!0 -
Do any of us ever ask for a complete breakdown of a bill when we're abroad on Holiday? Nope.....if we did we might get a bit of a shock!
There could be all sorts of add-ons to the basic hotel price.....and often there is. But because all we see is the bottom-line price, we accept it without question.0 -
We went to Rome a couple of years ago and the tourist tax at that time was €5 per person per night. It was payable even for our 10 year old granddaughter although her younger sibling was exempt. We stayed for 5 nights so quite an amount to pay but we were aware before we travelled and it’s just part of what it costs to go to fabulous places!0
