New car needs a new gearbox - can I reject it?

Just spoken to the dealer and they have offerred to take it to a transmission specialist to have the gearbox repaired. They will deal with the transportation of the car to and from the specialist and also provide a courtesy car in the meantime. They are going to call me back later with details of how and when etc.
I have discussed the option of rejecting the car and they were OK with that, simply saying it is within my rights and that the choice is mine.
I like the car, haven't been able to find a similar replacement for the same sort of cost.
What is interesting is that I have just found the car I part exchanged is up for sale on their forecourt. So if I reject the new car, I wonder if I could ask for my old car back plus the cash I paid?
So the $64million question is do I get it repaired and then hopefully have the car I thought I was buying with a new gearbox or reject it and start my car search again..

Well if you keep and have the car repaired then you run the risk of it failing again later down the line and by then you wont get a full refund. Also, are you getting a "new" gearbox or are they simply repairing the existing one, it sounds to me like the latter, in which case I'd definitely get rid.
You may like this car but I'm sure there are plenty similar Mondeos out there.0 -

It sounds like the transmission specialist is going to repair it, not replace it.
Ford (like most manufactures) don't get involved with gearbox repairs, just treat it as a single part and offer to replace it at great cost.
The specialist should be able to repair it & service the 'box at the same time, and it should be fine afterwards.0 -
My current thinking is that I am going to go for the repair, but ask them to extend the 30 grace period I have to reject the car from the date I get it back from the repairers. So it will be just as if I bought the car from the day I get it back.
Does that sounds reasonable?0 -

Ford say it needs a new box.
These may not be as far apart as it sounds, though - Ford may only supply complete exchange boxes, but a transmission specialist may well be able to fix the existing one.
I presume you've got the "Powershift" box? It wasn't a great success... It's a dual-clutch, like the VW DSG, a joint design between Ford and Getrag (one of the big transmission manufacturers). TBH, if that is the box, then I'd reject, count yourself lucky, and buy something with a less troublesome design of transmission...0 -
Yes it is a Powershift gearbox.0
