Passport / Driving license renewal

I have a confession. My photocard driving license is around two years out of date. I have since moved house also.

I also need to renew my passport, as I am going abroad in a few months.

I believe that you can renew your passport online and that it is cheaper to do this? I also believe that you can only do this if your driving license photo is up to date?

Having checked the DVLA website, you can also renew your driving license online if you have a valid passport, so there is a 'chicken and egg' situation here?

Am I correct in my assumption that I should renew my driving license photo (and address details) first, and then when that is returned, apply for my passport online? I would much rather do everything online, but it would be good to know the cheapest way to renew both.

No that is not correct. DVLA use your passport photo to renew your licence online, Passport Office will not use your driving licence photo to renew your passport.

You can renew your passport online by uploading your new photo, once you have that you can renew your licence online with your passport.

I'm not sure which was round it was for me, but the same photo is on my driving licence and passport.

If you are driving with an expired licence you are driving without a valid licence so it's highly likely that your insurance isn't valid either. If stopped by the police you would be charged with both offences and your car could also be impounded. Get the licence sorted immediately.

Surely it's just an out of date photo, the licence is still valid.

It is as peachyprice says. When you have a valid passport, DVLA can use your photo featured on it for an online driving licence renewal. It cannot be done the other way around, so OP should renew their passport online first.

I would benevolently assume, despite the confession, that they are not currently driving unlicensed.

Just to say that the op never said they have a car and drive. They may very well have an expired licence if they don't use it.

No, a driving licence has an expiry date on it (which she has not noticed) and it's also a legal requirement to inform the DVLA of an address change soon after moving. So that's 2 offences that have been committed!

If she doesn't currently drive then it's logical to get the passport renewed first. If she does then she should sort out the driving licence asap even if it means doing it by post.

Modern photo driving licences expire after 10 years, or on your 70th birthday (whichever happens first), unlike the old paper only one which was valid to age 70 (I think) irrespective of when issued. Many people don't realise that, but that is no defence in law.

I just checked on DVLA website and it says my license has expired, but it says I have the right to drive categories of vehicles until 2050, and it says I have a valid license.

I don't know if it means I am driving without valid insurance, but obviously I will get this renewed ASAP.

I don't think it is a criminal offence, or even a penalty point incurring motoring offense? But I know it is potentially a hefty fine.

It is illegal to drive without insurance!
