I just checked on DVLA website and it says my license has expired, but it says I have the right to drive categories of vehicles until 2050, and it says I have a valid license.

I don't know if it means I am driving without valid insurance, but obviously I will get this renewed ASAP.

I don't think it is a criminal offence, or even a penalty point incurring motoring offense? But I know it is potentially a hefty fine.

If you are feeling brave you could call into your local police station and ask them for clarification. I would advise using the bus to get there.

From the gov.uk site "Motorists must renew their photocard licence when it expires. If they fail to renew their licence and supply a photo that is a recent and true likeness, they will be breaking the law and may have to pay a fine of up to £1,000."

Just to make the OP feel even better I've found this too "If more than two years has passed since your driving licence expired, you may be made to retake your driving test in order to get a new licence."

I suggest you read the following link.

Hopefully it will clarify the situation for you.

I know it is illegal to drive without insurance. I was saying I don't know if driving with an out of date photo will invalidate my insurance. I still hold a license to drive the vehicle.

I would assume that it will be more than enough for majority of insurers to refuse pay out. As the link says you are still covered 3rd party so not breaking the law in that sense. But best to sort asap.
