I immediately informed Barclays about the situation and they started investigation. This was middle of October 2019. I have recently had a phone call off their fraud investigating team saying I am liable therefore I will not get any refunds.

Realistically it sounds like the bank isn't liable in this situation. You are very unlikely to get the money back.

Given the amount involved, I would automatically make a complaint. First tell them you are making an official complaint and their complaints team. They have 8 weeks to resolve it, and then you'll get the details to take it to the ombudsman. As said, it is very unlikely that this will be successful and you shouldn't put much hope into it. Still, for 25k I would chase down any lead, however remote. You should also have told the police by now by reporting to actionfraud, if you haven't already.

One warning - I wouldn't raise a complaint if at any point you have been dishonest during the conversations with the bank. Sometimes, the more specialist teams that review complaints will spot the dishonesty (they have all sorts of information you wouldn't expect) and you can find a CIFAS marker put against you, which would make your situation much worse. I'm not saying that applies to you, but it's just something to bear in mind.

On Barclays internet banking you simply cannot send money to a new payee with authorising a new payee setup via your pinsentry.

Wonder why Barclays fraud systems didn't pick up the draining of a current account, draining of an ISA, loan application for 25k and that drained as well - all to a new payee. I guess you just can't get the staff these days.

Oh and I agree with the above - definitely make a complaint - the maximum daily payment limit for a personal current account holder is £10,000 via internet banking so they should not have let the £33k plus go through.

The first payment to a new payee is limited to £2k as well.

It's been higher than that for some time

Hmm, conflicting information. I can't confirm as I have a Platinum account and have made many payments £10k>£50k
  • My FART system has picked this up as another 85% likely to be from our resident Serial Troll (ST) - right down to the 'please be gentle' request which is designed purely to incite.

I think our ST (if the ladies will pardon the acronym) is running out of believable ideas.

On reflection this appears to be if it's done on the app.
