    Which insurer was this..?

Mine "lost" my proof of NCD and all other details of my dealings with them a few years back, which landed me in all sorts of trouble and extra expense when I renewed and moved to another company

And the insurer concerned was shockingly bad about sorting it out as well - even when I managed to piece together virtually all the info they had lost by contacting other firms/repairers etc directly. They still used the one thing I couldn't provide evidence for as the reason to void me!

My wife's' Van insurance renewal came through last week, it had gone from £480 for £790, despite we hadn't had a claim and had been with them for 2 years now. I did a quick search online and found a comparable quote for £450, so gave them a ring to cancel the policy and within 5 mins of being on the phone the chap reduced my premium from £790 to £460, because he could apply some special discounts for us. I asked why these weren't applied automatically and he said they were only for special customers. This company would have made £330 out of us if we hadn't tried to switch, how many customers don't think of ringing up and questioning the quotes they receive for insurance, utilities etc. Interesting we spent another 45 mins on the phone tweaking the annual millage, agreed value, excess etc, and he managed to, reduce it by only another £4, what a joke.
It's an established and well-publicised business model that relies on inertia. It's been going on for decades and is successful. Why change it? If people can't be bothered to shop around and prefer to be lazy and auto-renew, I'm happy because they're subsidising lower premiums for those of us that are prepared to put a bit of effort in.

I didn't know that I would loose my NCD because I was switched to a classic insurance policy as my car became old enough to qualify, I think it was when it was over 25 years old. It would have been nice if they explained this to me as I had another policy on a 2nd car that i had started from 0 years NCD at around the same time so I could have transferred this across and saved fair bit. Unfortunately companies are not interested in saving you money despite the promises on the ads they are all out to make a much money as possible. Can you honestly remember the last time a company rung you up and told you it had changed some details for you offered you a saving?
It must be mentioned somewhere in T&C. It's also usually on the website or while buying the policy. I had classic car policy and had no doubt that it doesn't earn any NCD. Policy itself was ridiculously cheap including agreed valuation.

I suggest talking to other companies and mentioning that your NCD wasn't used because you had classic car insurance.

No, not an anomaly at all.
Classic policies simply don't use or accrue NCD. Your NCD has been spare and unused since it was last on a normal policy, and has timed-out after two years.
My "friend" many years ago had a classic car policy
When he needed to transfer to a normal policy he simply asked the classic insurers to send him a letter stating that no claims had been made in the previous 5 years.
He then sent this to the new insurance company who cheerfully allocated him 5 years NCD
I could not possibly suggest this was a clever thing to do.
