I've not made a claim and as far as i know no one has claimed against me. I did have a cracked windscreen changed, and i just paid the £50 excess i think from memory, but that was more than a year ago so shouldn't come into this years

Check your policy to see if that is what has removed your NCD. It wouldn't on any policy I've held but I'm not sure that's universal.

I've checked and the windscreen was not this years policy it was the year before so it didn't effect it.

Is there a chance it did affect it but it was belated? In other words, it came late in the policy year and didn't affect the next anniversary?

There's obviously some reason for it disappearing. It might simply be maladministration but before you start challenging on that, at least eliminate all the possible genuine reasons.

TBH, this all seems a bit strange to me and I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt (so far) as I'm finding this difficult to believe so assuming there's nothing more to this story than you're letting on ( and this is not a school holidays post ;) ) then make a formal complaint to the insurer followed by a complaint to the FCO.

    Who is the insurer?

Also, do you insure any other vehicles?

If you have last year's renewal with the no-claims record on it and you haven't made a claim and it's the same insurer, then it's their clerical error.

OK after many phone calls to the insures i think I've got to the bottom of it. The lady I spoke to this morning was very helpful and said that as the vehicle is over 25 years old its on a special classic car insurance policy. And as the premium is so low they don't apply and NCD as it would have very little effect, which does make scene. But when i asked her why they don't record the NCD for future use she said it would be irrelevant. I then said to her what if i go out and buy a new car and the insurance were to go up to say £800, I would like to be able to apply my 15 years NCD to the new policy but they would have 0 years NCD recorded on the policy for me despite the fact i have nearer 15 years. she didn't have an answer and said sorry, was there anything else she could help me with ! I think i might have stumbled across a bit of an anomaly in the insurance world!!

No, not an anomaly at all.
Classic policies simply don't use or accrue NCD. Your NCD has been spare and unused since it was last on a normal policy, and has timed-out after two years.
  • I didn't know that I would loose my NCD because I was switched to a classic insurance policy as my car became old enough to qualify, I think it was when it was over 25 years old. It would have been nice if they explained this to me as I had another policy on a 2nd car that i had started from 0 years NCD at around the same time so I could have transferred this across and saved fair bit. Unfortunately companies are not interested in saving you money despite the promises on the ads they are all out to make a much money as possible. Can you honestly remember the last time a company rung you up and told you it had changed some details for you offered you a saving?
  • My wife's' Van insurance renewal came through last week, it had gone from £480 for £790, despite we hadn't had a claim and had been with them for 2 years now. I did a quick search online and found a comparable quote for £450, so gave them a ring to cancel the policy and within 5 mins of being on the phone the chap reduced my premium from £790 to £460, because he could apply some special discounts for us. I asked why these weren't applied automatically and he said they were only for special customers. This company would have made £330 out of us if we hadn't tried to switch, how many customers don't think of ringing up and questioning the quotes they receive for insurance, utilities etc. Interesting we spent another 45 mins on the phone tweaking the annual millage, agreed value, excess etc, and he managed to, reduce it by only another £4, what a joke.
