What is a normal Internet speed?

I guess because I am getting on a bit I'm set in my ways, a creature of habit and although I know that some idiot government sold of BT I still consider it as the old BT and not a normal profiteering organisation. Stupid, I know but perhaps with your help its time for a change especially if you were to be kind enough to suggest what alternative telephone and Broadband supplier I should consider. I will now go and look at my bill again to determine what period of time it covers.
I would wait until the problem is resolved before initiating any switch, you could end up with more issues and of course you may be due compensation from BT if this has been a long term issue.
Once it has been sorted however you really do need to switch or talk to BT, you're paying way too much even if you were receiving the full speed.
For comparison I'm paying £25 a month for NowTV's standard fibre plus Anytime Calls package which gives me:-
Ping: 15ms
DL: 37.5Mbps
UL: 7.6Mbps0 -
As above i pay BT circa £38 per month for 80 meg _ + Line Rental + Phone Calls + BT Sport HD and BT TV .
Long long time since billing was per quarter on standard contracts .
A lot of users on here are getting on a bit but dont use that as an excuse to pay over the odds .0 -
My wife told me this evening that BT had telephoned us to say that they were worried about the low level of Internet speed our area near Abingdon were receiving and an Engineer would be calling on us. I checked the Internet speed at 19.00 and found it as follows.
Response time latency 706 S
Download speed 1.4 Mbps
Upload speed 0.2 Mbps
What should it be?
Your ping is dire. I used to get close to 120ms when I have a 56k modem back in the day. 700 is in something wrong territory. Amazed bt rang you up but assuming its genuine hopefully there is a fix coming. You could get bt to run a line test to check for faults though if an eng turns up that may solve the issue.0 -

The 'man in the pub' had this call - it was so bad that they offered him compensation.
They managed to rob £7K from his account in the process0 -

In the OP's case the call was likely genuine. I've yet to hear of a foreign based tech scammer sending out a BT Openreach engineer.
The original post just says "an engineer will be calling on us" not that a BT Openreach person will knock at the door! Could just be another phone call -I'd be very wary0 -

They obviously do have an issue with their broadband though, I doubt they're subject to such an elaborate scam that they've had their internet hacked and the speed results altered.0 -

Given the nature of mass spam the chances of getting a scam and having bad internet are not small.
Contacting Bt directly would be wise. They can clear it up.0 -

Contacting BT would certainly be advisable if only to see if they're due any compensation for loss/poor service (who knows how long this has been going on) but there really isn't any need for elaborate scams as there are enough daft people around to fall for the simple ones unfortunately.0 -

BT was really expensive before it got sold off, you just didn't have a choice.
If you are happy with the speed you've been getting, then you should look for a cheap ADSL deal.
I get about the same speed on ADSL as you are getting on Fibre and for about 1/5th of the price. The post office have a deal on which works out at £11.74 a month if you sign up through broadband genie (it's £15.90 a month but they give you a £50 amazon voucher within 90 days). topcashback are offering £50.50 cash back if you sign up with them, although it may be more risky.0
