What is a normal Internet speed?

Options
My wife told me this evening that BT had telephoned us to say that they were worried about the low level of Internet speed our area near Abingdon were receiving and an Engineer would be calling on us. I checked the Internet speed at 19.00 and found it as follows.
Response time latency 706 S
Download speed 1.4 Mbps
Upload speed 0.2 Mbps
What should it be?

    depends what you have subscribed

but the latency with 706ms is already way to high to a ordinary local server.

    my data
    PING ms 9
    DOWNLOAD Mbps 191.04
    UPLOAD Mbps 21.13

subscribed to virgin 200mbit downstream, upload 20mbit.

so mine looks ok :)- a "normal"internet speed does not exist. you local circumstances play a big role.
  • Well BT will be able to check the best speed for your area. The speed you are currently getting is incredibly low.

I’m not sure how much you pay for your package, but for mine which is £45 a month, I’m getting 80mbps compared to your 1.4mbps.

    My upload speed is 19mbps.

If you are in the city then something is drastically wrong and it needs fixing. If you are in the countryside then it’s possibly right however over the past few years they have put fibre cabling in most remote areas so let them come & check it out.

I might appear thick but I have no idea what I'm paying and am wary about asking.

I checked and found the following.
Broadband and Calls £52.49 Superfast Fibre 1 Unlimited + Calls
I assume that's for a quarter and if it is that's not expensive because I spend a lot of time on the internet checking historical facts for a subject I'm interested in.

    Ouch!

Perhaps you should take a break from researching historical facts and spend a few minutes researching broadband and phone deals.

Oh and no, it's not per quarter.

I guess because I am getting on a bit I'm set in my ways, a creature of habit and although I know that some idiot government sold of BT I still consider it as the old BT and not a normal profiteering organisation. Stupid, I know but perhaps with your help its time for a change especially if you were to be kind enough to suggest what alternative telephone and Broadband supplier I should consider. I will now go and look at my bill again to determine what period of time it covers.

Superfast 1 is 'upto' 55 Mbps service.

Put your BT phone number into this checker.
    https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/

Look at the VDSL Range B Downstream Handback threshold value. I believe that is the minimum speed you should be getting.

There is clearly a fault somewhere, perhaps on your incoming line, or with the phone extension wiring in your property. It requires investigation.

£52.49 Superfast Fibre 1 Unlimited + Calls sounds like you are out of contract.

(A friend renewed their Superfast Fibre 2 with pay as you go calls, for £23.99 pm a month ago. New 24 months contract. New BT Smart hub provided for extra £10 delivery. The price includes line rental. Their previous 18 months contract included weekend calls at same price)
