    Hi Folks,

I have updated the first post with the information about the Cambridge BS account (can be opened by post or phone).

There is nothing else I can see that has changed.

I will do another update next weekend.

  • Incidentally I didn't spot on your list the current RS offering from Swansea Building Society: 2.50% p.a. variable, 12 months, max £500 per month, branch or post. Sadly it's only open to residents of Wales, so that counts me out (as well as presumably ~95% of other forum users).

Just had a quick scan and couldn't obviously spot it - would you mind pointing out where you saw this?

How do I open and manage my account?
Only one account per person/institution is allowed. To open an account you must be resident in Wales. Simply call at one of our branches or complete an application form and post it to us together with a cheque made payable to ‘Swansea Building Society a/c (your name)’. Minimum monthly investment is £25 up to a maximum of £500. At least one deposit must be made every month. Regular monthly payments may be made by Standing Order or transfer from another account held with the Society. The Standing Order/Transfer should be set up for any day the following month direct with your bank. In the case of a joint account, only one Standing Order/Transfer can be operated. Failure to comply with any of the above conditions will result in the account being closed and the balance transferred to another account you hold with the Society.

I just gave them a ring to make sure you could have a issue 4 and an issue 5 and that's no problem - its one of those you can apply for online then you print off and send your cheque she said.

Also issue 4 has a maximum holding of £6000 - so if you deposit the maximum £250 you will reach this level after ??? number of months - when my account is close to the maximum I am dropping my standing order down to the minimum amount at that stage - for me that will be towards the end of 2018.

I'd need to check, but I think someone suggested that when you reach the £6000 withdrawing £600 and putting the SO to £50.

    I'm missing something here... why would you do above ? Is it 'just' to keep the a/c open/earning 3.05% ? Why £600? Why SO of £50 ? (£50 x 12 = £600, so .....?) Please explain.
