Do I need to set up a SO myself, or is this automatically set up based on the date of my first payment?

It should be automatically set-up for the same date in each proceeding month from your initial payment :).

So I popped in to ask if there had been any cancellations and the girl said no, so I left. I was just outside in the street

No offer of coffee, biscuits, a comfy armchair and a newspaper?:)

Issue 2 is a clean 3% for all customers.

OH has Santander reg esaver issue 2 @ 3% and is only 8 months into it. No communication has yet been received advising of a rate increase, so, if rate increase isn't going to be applicable to this issue, can it be closed so that a new 5% can be opened instead? I've had a look at the docs downloaded at time of application and I can't see anything in it to suggest that can't be done.

PS Why would they increase rate on some issues but not others?

Have just closed the Issue 3 Regular saver I opened on March 10th,no way to do it on line so had to do it by telephone.....after being told in my first call to Santander ( after waiting for the Savings dept to answer for 25 mins ) that I COULD do it online.

Anyway, will open an Issue 4 ( hopefully ) when the computer says Yes ( Closure of Issue 3 has to go through the system ?? 2 working days )

btw...apparently savings dept went home at 4.30 .not back until Monday, what fun they will have

Will also say this has caught Santander on the hop,no one knew what I was on about until you mutter the words..."Martin Lewis forum" .....suddenly ..."will you hold " ...."I've just found it" ...

Considering I made a trip into a town with a Santander to open the Issue 3 beginning of March which the assistant opened as the ordinary savings account by mistake and I had to phone them up anyway and go through the whole process again....only for it to become possible to open the account on line a few days later...this has been a complete pain.

My luck with this account probably means now that I've closed it they will announce later next week Issue 3 has gone up to 5%…
