  • Leeds BS Regular Saver Issue 3 became a closed issue today. No more deposits accepted. Interest rate was to drop from 3.05% to 2.30% with effect from today. However, online banking still shows the rate as 3.05%. Would there be grounds for claiming that this rate is still applying today? :)

The online service normally updates overnight. Only the balance appears to update in almost real-time.

My M&S Monthly Saver has just matured. Am I able to open a new one even though I opened my last account when there were no rules about having switched to them using the switching service and having two direct debits?

As expected, the interest rate dropped overnight.

Quoting from their website: Exclusive offer. Only available to current account customers who have switched to us using the Current Account Switch Service and have two active Direct Debits.

Similar words are in the actual T&Cs. You can still switch and set up 2 DDs, though they are not likely to pay you a switching bonus now as they have now tightened up the switching offer terms, too.

I renewed mine recently, having, like you, opened the original before the change in T&Cs. However, I had actually switched in an unused account (for £125 gift card) and in anticipation of renewing, have 2 DDs set up.

When I phoned to renew, the CS rep mentioned that she could see I'd switched an account in, and had the required DDs set up, so I qualified.:)

The OP is an existing current account customer whose Regular Saver has just matured.

Would he really have to switch another account to gain access to a new regular saver?

Or lose the opportunity to open a new RS if the switching condition did not apply when he became a current account holder?

Exclusive access to our high rate monthly savings account for existing and new M&S current account customers.

    I think I'd ring M&S to check.

Yes. I am an existing current account holder (2 years) and needed to switch to gain access to my 3rd RS. Renewed mine about a week ago and this was one of the checks made.

News on the Saffron 3.50% fixed for a year (issue 3) acount:

Previously this was "members only" to apply by post, i.e. you had to be a customer with >£100 for a year.

Then it changed to "existing customers" but they rejected my application citing I was not a member (even though the website didn't state this was needed).

Now they've added small print: "To qualify as an existing customer to open this account, you need to have held a savings or mortgage account with the Society for at least six months."

So it appears the conditions have changed. You can open an online savings account then hope they still have a decent regular savings product in six months time.
