  • Hello, and welcome to the thread. This is a great time to go through your clothes and sort them out. (Note to self – that includes you, PollyWollyDoodle!)  I will leave it to Pip, who is the expert on rationing, but my understanding is that it’s the quantity not the cost, so yes even BOGOF  boots will count as another pair.  The only way to get clothes off-ration is to buy secondhand.
Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.

Hello, I know I’m very late to this party, but I was wondering if I could join you?

I’m fascinated by WW2 and rationing, plus I have far too many clothes I need to sort through so this would be good motivation! I hope I’ve calculated this correctly:

    2 joggers and 1 trousers- 18 coupons
    3 thermal leggings- 6 coupons
    3 T-Shirts- 15 coupons
    1 blouse- 5 coupons
    1 pair Wellies- 7 coupons
    Total- 51 coupons (yikes!)

To be honest I don’t really need to buy anything else, but I do need to sort out what I already have. I had my first baby 6 months ago and have basically been wearing a rotation of the same 3 outfits over and over to the point where they’re now starting to fall apart. Meanwhile, my cupboards upstairs are full with stuff I either have no use for, or more likely, can’t fit into anymore. But I don’t like throwing things out, so I need to find a way to use what I’ve got!
I do have a question though- I was looking at buying some sturdy boots, since I ruined my last ones by putting them in the dryer (in my defence, they had no cleaning instructions lol). If there is a BOGOF offer, do the coupons still need to be counted for the free item?

Hope everyone is feeling well in these trying times, sorry for the essay!

P.S. Congratulations on your engagement Laura!
Hello @spooney7 !  Welcome to the Challenge.  I'm sorry but, as Polly said, it's quantity not cost that counts, so yes the coupons would still need to be counted for the free item in a BOGOF.  Don't be disheartened - since you didn't join the Challenge at the start of the year, would you like to pro-rate your coupons instead?  That would give you 49.5 for the remainder of the year.  (Most people pro-rate, if they join mid-year.)

Like you, I'm fascinated by how people lived through the War.  There was a story on the BBC app yesterday about it's own history and the show The Kitchen Front, which they broadcast during the War.  Sadly, I can't find it on their website to get a link to post it here, however I did find a story about a new Mass Observation study to cover the Lockdown:  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-52229919

@PipneyJane Thank you, pro-rating sounds great

Thanks for clarifying about the BOGOF, it did seem too good to be true lol. I’m trying to streamline my wardrobe and only buy things that I know I will end up wearing- for so many years I bought pretty dresses and heels when I’m most comfortable in plaid shirts and boots!
  • I found my way onto the V&A website (thinking about trying to make the Mary Quant Georgie dress) when I noticed their knitting section had lots of free 1940s knitting patterns.  The link to it is:

Likewise, Pip, I must get back to WFH.  I did go into work this morning but my hayfever was really bad.  People didn’t appreciate me coughing and sneezing so I came home!
