    Yes, that's how my Nana used the word - I don't think I've ever heard anyone younger use it!

    God knows, @Laura_Elsewhere, although I definitely come from a “spring onion” state not a shallot one.  I’m not sure shallots (as the British know them), are grown in Australia.
