I have decided to look at a QLED55Q85R at a shop and make comparisons to the Q90R
Probably worth giving the Q80 a look as well.

main difference seems to be the oneconnect(great if wall mounting) and fewer dimming zones(50V100) but you may not notice those.
Q80 £1,000
Q85 £1,200
Q90 £1,8000 -
SD is poor on any 4K TV due to up scaling, 8K TV's will be even worse.
No, it's poor because you're seeing the same amount of information on that 60" screen, as you got on a 32 inch CRT. You're zoomed in further. Some 'upscaling' features can make things worse instead of help, and of course on some platforms the SD channels are given terrible bandwidth, squeezing out whatever quality there was. Watch a DVD (SD) on a well set up screen and it'll look grand, though will lack some 'definition' that we've got used to.
OLED is organic LED. Self illuminating pixels.
QLED is a fancy marketing term for a good LED backlit TV.0 -

If you don't upscale the picture would be a box in the middle of the screen. As this is 'stretching' to fill the screen the picture it looses definition. As for DVD SD looking grand upscaled, no way. Blu-ray on the other hand is OK.0 -
I called into a local supplier of TV's etc.
Looked at the 55" Q85R and Q90R, also the Oled C9 and E9
My current tv 10yr old LG 42LH5000.
Looking at the differences old v new, although there is nothing wrong my tv.
And as I'm probably an average tv viewer. I think I would waste £1k etc for a replacement, just to keep up with Technology/Jones..
So think I will wait awhile for mine to hit the dust or technology improves further.
Thanks guys0 -

No, it's the size of the screen. As you say, without upscaling, an SD picture would only occupy the middle 500 or so lines in the TV. And it would look sharp. It's making the picture so big that makes it look bad. This is done, as you say, via upscaling. But it's the massively zooming in that is the problem. There are only 500 odd lines of information in SD, 1080 in Full HD and 2160 in 4K. All of those formats can be 'stretched' a certain amount, and conversely, the higher resolutions aren't really worth it, at smaller sizes. As for DVD SD looking grand upscaled, no way. Blu-ray on the other hand is OK.
Grand in the context above being 'far better than SD TV channels' which lack bandwidth, not resolution.0 -

You could probably go bigger(55"+) for <£500 retaining at least what you have in terms of picture quality.
Until you start watching more 4k/HDR there may be no point in upgrading if you are happy with your 42"
Not watched it yet but will be interesting to see what the BBC have done with Dracula with their UHD HDR stream on iplayer.

^ Yep, but my point is that people should not judge SD by what they see on Freeview and Sky. Some of those channels are horribly squashed with too little bandwidth, like a low quality MP3, and that can introduce horrible artifacts. This is nothing to do with 'SD'.
DVD is SD at its best
Blu Ray is HD at its best
4K, HDR Blu Ray is 4k at its best.0 -

Unfortunately, with the move to streaming, sales of Blu-Ray are dropping and DVD stagnating. This has resulted in a severe reduction in back catalogue releases and DVD is often the only alternative.
It's only a matter of time before physical media becomes a niche product, which is unfortunate for those who prefer their own library/ collection and also generally as streaming providers will increasingly control what viewing content remains available..0 -

It took a while to actually set it up though as some of the motion on sports was jerky.
Noooooo!
I am so sensitive to motion blur and sport accounts for more than 50% of my tv viewing. Been suffering this last 5 years with what was reviewed by many trusted sources as ‘a great LCD for sports with low motion blur’.
Joined Samsung forums to set the box up specifically for sports but LCD just doesn’t come close to plasma for handling motion.
I was led to believe that OLED would be the saviour and would solve my issue and the cash is sitting in the bank ready for the start of Euro 2020. Is motion blur really still an issue with OLED?0
