Want to upgrade my 15yr LG LCD 40" TV.
Choice between LG OLED55E9PLA and Samsung QLED Q90R for their wide viewing and rich colours etc
Read that the LG Oleds tend to burn their screens from various static logo's on the tv screen etc.
Read that the Samsung does not support Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos speakers etc.
I dont play any Games, Dvd's or anything else other than Sky or Freeview, if I cancel Sky.
Would I need Dolby Vision/Atmos with Sky or Freeview. Can anyone explain their purpose/functions for everyday general use of tv..

OLED, only if you leave on static banner displays like BBC News or Sky News. CRT and LCD TV's were / can also be affected. Note QLED is actually LCD.Read that the Samsung does not support Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos speakers etc.
Samsung does not support Dolby Vision correct, they have gone the HDR 10+ route with some not all TV's. No reason why it wont support Dolby Atmos with suitable external equipment.I dont play any Games, Dvd's or anything else other than Sky or Freeview, if I cancel Sky. No Dolby Vision on Sky. No Dolby Vision / Atmos on Freeview. If you cancel Sky why would you need Dolby Atmos? Do you know what Dolby Atmos is?Can anyone explain their purpose/functions for everyday general use of tv..
Plenty of websites out there that will do that if you search.0 -
Specifically on the Dolby Vision/Atmos query, don't think Sky make use of either -think you have to go to full 4k on Netflix UHD to take advantage currently and you need a quite sophisticated sound system.
Further thought,I've been wrestling with a similar dilemma for some time ie OLED or QLED. Many hours spent reading reviews and visiting the likes of Richer Sounds!!
I've come down on the side of QLED because I have a "bright" lounge with big windows at both ends and, as I do a fair amount of viewing in daytime (sports in particular) I felt that the Samsung offered superior performance with reflections and overall brightness. I was comparing the LG C9 with the Q85R.
IF I had a pitch black lounge and watched a lot of high quality films via Amazon /Netflix then OLED would be the way to go.
Since my trusty old plasma is still performing ,I'm holding off until the 2020 models come out in the Spring in the hopes that the prices will drop a bit further!:rotfl:0 -

Would that include the banners from many of the sky channels displayed in the top corners of the screen such as 'FOX' and others.
I've also read LG OLED's are more prone to screen burn.0 -

Yes but I was not planning to list every possibility.workingboy wrote: »I've also read LG OLED's are more prone to screen burn.
Well as currently all large OLED screens are made by LG Display only it should affect all manufacturers. My three year old LG OLED does not have screen burn, so with a few precautions and it should not be an issue. Anyway the picture is far superior to LCD under what ever name it is given.0 -

If you stick with the main brands OLED 55" seem to have bottomed out at very close to £1k(+- a bit) during the TV annual cycles for the last couple of years(I jumped in at (£1k June 2018 to go up in size from a working 42" Plasma))
There may be some bargains as they drop the 2019 stock but £1k seems to be the trigger for a lot of people so I think that will be it for the next 12months as the new 2020 stock won't come down till Black Friday.0 -

With the LG
why the E(£1,800) when the B(£1k) or C(£1,200) are much cheaper.
What features of the E are you wanting for the extra money?
Similar with the Samsung what is the extra £500 for the 90 buying you over the 85.
with your proposed viewing options not sure you will get any benefit from the more expensive models and even those at this £1kish price range may be over kill.0 -
I have the LG OLED55C8PLA which is a great TV. Just had it 12 months now no screen burn at all but then I don't watch anything with permanent banners.
The only thing I am disappointed with is SD quality TV especially local news channels for some reason are absolutely awful.
It took a while to actually set it up though as some of the motion on sports was jerky.0 -

SD is poor on any 4K TV due to up scaling, 8K TV's will be even worse.0 -

SD quality is just bad.....The stations using it usually have content to match, so it's not really something I would take into consideration when choosing a TV
Plenty of content from other sources for little cost to keep an evening filled if that's the requirement.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

I also have been looking at these TV's
I have decided to look at a QLED55Q85R at a shop and make comparisons to the Q90R0
