Can we do anything?

Options
Ok so we have lived in our home 6 years and in that time there have been four crashes outside our front door due to speeding motorist. On two seperate occasions these involved our parked car and two of our own cars written off.

Last night around 10.30pm we heard the dreaded screeching wheels and then bang! Another accident.

The car hit three cars (luckily not ours this time) but drove off. He left parts of his car behind so we know the colour make etc. Police weren't interested.

Local Road safety campaign and councillor did research and speed testing of the road and declared there is no issue i'm guessing compared to other areas one a year on the same road isn't big statistically! even though we are a small village one way in one way out.

Anyway I am wondering if there is nothing stopping me from doing my bit by way of possibly putting signs up on the side of the road warning motorists of the sharp turn that leads onto a hill full of parked cars?

I have even contemplated painting or having a huge sign made up to go on the side wall of my house as motorists would see it hopefully before they turn the corner.

I am just worried this could so easily happen whilst i am putting my children in the car i honestly think it would take a death to happen before anything is done

Have you considered/is it feasible to have a drive or other off street parking? May take your vehicle out of the direct ' line of fire'.

The law is stopping you, you have to get permission from the council, you could do what other folk have done and push the problem elsewhere by involving your local councillor?
Or you could move home .

sadly not as the houses are terraced front doors are on pavements (no fronts to the houses) the road has a corner that leads onto the hill and then another corner, both corners at top and bottom of hill are double yellow so we can only park on the hill i have thought of parking it elsewhere but with two young children it would be difficult as would bringing the shopping back but as we have two cars we may well park one elsewhere so at least one is safe!

Yes ou local council has tried but I dont particularly think he has any interest in pushing the issue.
we did actually have our home up for sale earlier this year becuase we hate the road but took it down as we do really the area its just a shame the road is a nightmare. speed bumps, give ways, even signs would help
  • I suspect moving is the only way to avoid it, if that's feasible.

The simplest action in your hands is also your most effective.

    Park elsewhere.

A sign's not going to make any difference - this bend is not invisible, and they're already proving they aren't overly worried about signage.

That apart, it's just down to lobbying the local authority. Get in contact with your ward councillor. Give them the documentation of the history.

The drivers can see the bend they are failing to negotiate and the cars they crash into so why would a sign make any difference?

i see your point, i am grasping at straws:(
  • Considering the number of accidents would it be worthwhile pestering the council for speed bumps etc, assuming the road is suitable.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

we have tried this with no luck, they have done some research and speed lines on the road and have said there is no speeding issues but these lines weren't even placed where the accidents happen but further down the village
