Confused... can we have two broadband providers in one house??

I'm asking because my parents and I are at war and control when my internet goes on and off, therefore the only solution is for me to get and pay for my own connection.

They are with Virgin Media, and my computer uses their internet connection via a wire.

I'm just wondering, would it be possible for my to connect my computer to the internet with a completely separate provider? I'm happy to pay for it, I'm just tired of the constant argument over the internet (or lack of, in my case).

Any advice is much appreciated re: what I need to do, as I haven't a clue. The only thing I know is that I definitely do not want wireless.

If it's another connection into their house then you do really need to get your parents permission before Mr Virgin turns up and starts drilling and lifting carpet.

Some of my friends have a net only connection from Telewest/Blueyonder and this has continued with Virgin.

  • I'm sure they'll deal with it... so long as I'm paying for it they don't have much choice (if they weren't so petty in the first place and stopped disconnecting my wire whenever it suits them, then I wouldn't have to do this) =/

What exactly do I need to do in order to get connected up? I genuinely have no idea.

I dont think Virgin will run a second cable connection to the same household, I think your options would be either a BT line installation and then an ADSL connection from either BT or any other ADSL provider or a USB 3G modem from either T-Mobile or 3UK who now will supply a data only modem for internet use for between £10 and £20 per month, (this option will not need any installation).

Whats wrong with Wireless??? It seems the obvious, simplest and cheapest solution!!

Perhaps your parents are giving you subtle hints to s0d off and get your own place lol :):)

The way I understand the OP, they are turning the router off, this would disconnect the wireless as well.

    Maybe.

The way I interpreted it was that he had an ethernet cable across the lounge leading into his room.
stopped disconnecting my wire whenever it suits them

His Parents are disconnecting his ethernet to get it out of the way.

Thats how I read it anyway lol :)

You should respect your parents wishes, if they are disconnecting it, they are doing that for a reason.

It's not your house, so you can't go about ordering phone lines to be connected.

Which is why ordering a USB modem from someone like 3 is probably the best way for the OP to go, at least then they can stay on-line and it shouldn't cause any further problems with the parents.

you can sometimes get multiple cable lines into the house, i believe its a max of 6 for buildings, as thats all the actual cable can handle, split 6 times, after that the signal carries too much noise

you could always split your cable yourself and have 2* whatever speed you chose,

Sorting the issue out like adults is far cheaper. If it is a cabling or sharing issue, then a wireless router will sort it out.

I was only asking a question, perhaps I shouldn't have even mentioned the bad feelin in the house... but anyway, my father has mood 'problems' so whenever he's in a bad mood, we all suffer and he does some spiteful things (switches off the internet, turfs us all out of our rooms, etc). My mother even agrees that this would be the best solution as then he can't play the 'well I pay the bill' card even though I have offered to pay my way for the last few years.

So there you go. Oh, and I currently connect up with a wire, but we've had wireless in the past and it never worked, but I will consider it again (is wireless different from wifi? =/). Thanks.

Edit: having done some reading, I understand now. Wireless does seem like the best + cheapest option. I'm gonna have a read through the sticky to see who's cheapest!
