  • I will not use online password storage which is a security disaster waiting to happen IMO.
    Bingo!

I use Firefox with a master password and I do not synchronise it's data with other devices.

I use an online password generator, normally Strong Random Password Generator. I then tend to use the maximum length password possible, depending on which site I am using - some only allow certain lengths such as 40 or 50 characters long.

Some examples of 128-character passwords generated using the above site:
    E!d8zpM"$wz+6^RLR-43b[Q&TCH2RGE8L79~5a?f2h!CatcGWvfrg3Cw2]}Nr'p_Z/Kvf#58>%L;R?]Mm_!Pr@W,2RXYUF'7!d&kD9#-g@T`F$}@p^b-jmsA4Z)Nx[pG

The app on my phone is marked up as 'MiniKeePass'. That's what it says under the icon anyway but yeah i used that method to get the actual .kdbx file to my phone.

    master password
This is what worries me a bit.

I have a ton of passwords in my head. My memory is awful but really as far as these passwords go, i remember quite a lot. Nationwide customer number for example is 10 digits. I know mine, my mothers, brothers & sisters as well as wifes (help manage their accounts through their request) as well as the 6 digit pass for each, as well as logins for TSB, HSBC. Halifax i'm a little shaky on but still, to remember so many for various banks, i surprise myself.

But then to remember 1 master password? I've done it before where i try to think of something new that i 'wont forget' and like i say, i purposely pick something that isn't the same as the rest ... but then i forget it.
Thankfully it's always been retrievable stuff and when i get a reminder or whatever it's a case of oh yeah of course that was it, i remember now.

But i know you don't get that with a lot of these password managers as they don't want the blame on them. So if you forget .... tough. That's what worries me.

Not sure how, if you have only one password to remember, you can forget it.

Well yeah obviously ... if you came in to this and only had 1 password that you dealt with. I guess it would be pretty hard to forget it.

But when, as i've already said, for over 10 years you've been memorising countless customer numbers, additional log in numbers, passwords and security answers to security questions for 5 people, 1 of which is yourself you get to the situation where you suddenly think damnit what new word did i select for this thing that was different from alllllllllllll the other ones that are stored in my head?

I've done it at least 3 times now. Sort of puts me off. I'd possibly have to note down a reminder somewhere.

I still don't see your problem...We all had to put the remembered data into it at some stage....Once done, it's just remembering your Master password/phrase.
By all means, write it down until it sinks in.....

thats fine. I had a go at explaining it. Not sure how else to phrase it tbh.

So I agree with you, i’d have to write it down somewhere until it became automatic when accessing the passwords file.
  • Out of curiosity and for those who know more about security than me ...

Purely from a security standing, would KeePass be more secure than something like LastPass and/or 1Password purely because it's not stored up in the sky - it's actually on your PC or smartphone
or would you say it's less secure or even no more or less secure?

I'm obviously discounting anyone who doesn't password protect their smartphone and/or desktop.

MiniKeePass is ok but it doesn't sync changes made on your phone to the database. Keepassium and others will do.
