@zafiro1984 - our garden had a chicken farm in it two owners ago and the high nitrogen content in their poo means we have a constant battle with nettles here, even 20 years later. It's great the way they grub out the weeds though and your brassicas should be fantastic!

Suffolk Lass - I would love to be able to grow brassicas but unfortunately we have acid sand as a soil, I've tried liming it but I don't have much success, maybe I don't put enough on!!   Perhaps I should try again this year.
I agree about nettles, the hens leave them well alone and at times I think we have the 'National Collection'
  • Just saying  I got a pair of sparkly wellies in a charity shop.

I wish you all a good 2021, I think we deserve it!
I'd also like to reflect that in the new thread we wont be seeing contributions from some much valued posters sadly no longer with us.

OS Grocery Challenge in 2025 I finished the year at £2880.99/£3000 or 96.03% of my annual spend so I am sticking with a £3000 annual budget for 2026
I also Reverse Meal Plan on that thread and grow much of our own premium price fruit and veg, joining in on the grow your own in 2026 discussion thread

  • Hello all, can I join? I don’t have an allotment and only a small garden but hoping to utilize both my sisters garden and my parents to grow some stuff this year. I have no idea what I’m doing but planted some garlic recently so hope that’s going to grow and have been looking at my 1940s housekeeping books for what to grow ect.

I’m hoping to grow tomatoes and um that’s about it at the moment, need to have a look at what we eat and make a list 🙂

It's good for the soul to walk with your soles on the soil.
