Our friend (in his 60's) has given his married daughter close to 100K to help pay her debts. She and her husband (the kids have been taken into care) are now intentionally homeless. They have parked their caravan, uninvited, in his front garden. He will not allow them access to power or water. They defecate in his garden. He is too scared to go home so, for over a year, he has been sleeping in his car close to his workplace. Is there a cheap/free legal way to get them evicted and prevent them from returning and harassing him? The situation has lead to mental health issues for him and he has contemplated suicide. He does not live near us so we cannot home him. Any information would be gratefully received.

Cant imagine the local authority being too impressed either about unauthorised camp in someones garden

Yes the police. Though if he's not been home for a year, I suspect they've long since moved in to the property.

Good to know you all feel as we do! He is not ex-military although his dad was so will see if that route can be followed. He really needs to get them off his property but has no funds. They are not in the house, fortunately, but one neighbour is trying to sell so may be the catalyst if it causes them problems. Please, constructive comments are appreciated, not cynical/snide remarks about it being far fetched. Thank you for your ideas.:A

Im going to be honest if it were true they are defecating around the garden environmental health would be involved by now as no way would neighbours tolerate that..........unless they are all feral. (Presuming they are not :rotfl:)

So he's not going home to pick up post, pay bills?
What about personal hygiene and laundry? Not many work places would tolerate the level of hygiene that tends to go along with living in a car.

Police won't get involved unless there's a breach of the peace as it's a civil matter. He needs to get legal advice about how to get them shifted from private land, and how to prevent them coming back.

I probably should not have used the expression 'far-fetched' but it must have been exaggerated/embroidered a bit as the previous posters have said work/other neighbours/inability to deal with post/pay bills/deal with the house, etc. etc, would have been a problem. You can't just walk away from a house and live in your car.....

Actually he has! The post is redirected to work. His mobile number has changed so they can't beg anymore. Work will not allow him to talk to them if they phone. He is able to shower etc at work and there are launderettes for clothes. He uses a microwave at work for a hot meal and, when he was without money, a colleague has given him sandwiches. He is parked in the work car park. There is far more to this situation which would not be appropriate to share. I too would find it hard to believe but we really do need to find a way to help him, it's been going on for far too long. My fear is for his health - particularly in the winter - there is even more of a story around this.
