In France some of the stores have spring loads fronting racks for drinks and other chilled goods.

As do some supermarkets in this country. along with spring loaded spice racks and others.

Never used one and never will, if a store cannot open a till I am happy to leave my shopping and go elsewhere, admittedly it wastes my time but they have to put the items back. It’s the old fashioned thing called customer service and before anyone says anything I have worked in retail for over 35 years. You scan for them next thing they will be handing out boxes of produce for you to put out while you shop. Totally agree, with the added reason that I keep someone in a job if I use a checkout. Like the young local lass that I know is bringing up two children on her own, due to the ratbag father leaving her and legging it.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

I always use them to avoid having to try to pack while having more of my shopping, lightest first of course, the opposite of how it needs to be packed, pushed in front of me and then having payment demanded while halfway through packing forcing me to stop packing to pay slowing me even further. This is often by people who despite appearing to have worked in retail for 35 years still don't understand what might actually help a customer.

At a nearby Morrisons I've had to leave the self service area and walk along the line of conveyors to find someone to sort a till problem, the person who should have been there had wandered off. On another visit there were three assistants gossiping while standing with their backs to the customers blocking the exit. I had to interrupt their conversation to get past.
    Bring on the robots.

I get more annoyed at the middle classes who have just discovered Aldi and Lidl, who despite the big signs telling them to pack their bags at the counter away from the till still spend ages holding up the queue while they carefully pack.
Lidl and Aldi are cheap for a reason, and that includes minimising the time spent at the till so they can shovel more people through. If you don't want to chuck it in the trolley at speed, stick to the Mr T. Etc.

But that’s the best thing about Aldi!

You shove everything back in the trolley at the checkout, then you can take your time and pack just as you like at your own pace without moaners like the OP breathing down your neck or tutting and sighing because they are apparently so important and their time so precious they can’t possibly spare the extra 30-40 seconds they might be held up by someone who dares to not live up to their standards of speed!

Exactly. I prefer the Aldi method whereby I can pack at the shelf at the front of the store. I pack according to where items will go when I get home ie all chilled stuff together. Saves effort when back in the kitchen!

Conversely, my daughter hates packing at Aldi as she feels she’s handling the shopping one extra time. She likes the prices in Aldi though so puts up with it.
