Supermarket self serve packing.

I agree with you OP. Just as bad, are the people who clearly don't know how to use a self checkout machine and require an attendant (usually stretched thin across too many machines already) to do everything for them.
Unless it's a small basket, we use one of the scan-as-you-shop options. Usually much quicker, except for the odd occasion where they want to do a re-scan. That said, I think Tesco spot check X items across all bags, and now that our local Sainsburys have dedicated self scan tills, they do the same rather than you having to unpack everything onto the belt.
When we moved county earlier this year, the two local Sainsburys didn't even have scan as you shop at all - it was traumatic. :rotfl:0 -
Strange one about people not putting bags on scales first.
I always do it, there is even an option on the till to select this, press option, lay all your bags out and then finish/start scanning option.
A problem occurs, I have never been asked to unpack them.0 -
Depends on the layout of the tills...
I use the self-service tills at our local Sainsburys and Waitrose.
No problem first putting the bag (or bags) in the bagging area at Sainsburys. They're quite well designed.
The Waitrose tills are another matter, and there I scan and then bag at the end. The bagging platform is quite small (only one bag at a time) and doesn't support the bag properly. It's also a foot or so higher (just above midriff level) than where you put your shopping basket, and it's surprisingly difficult to put stuff into a bag as the top of the bag is at eye-level. You quite often see the shopping of people who put the bag on first end up on the floor. They're really badly designed.0 -

It's torture, i know :rotfl:
My wife on the other hand has used them & says they're fine enough. She did have 1 issue with them but i can't remember what it was now. Maybe it was weighing veg or that might've been another thing, i really can't remember. Overall she didn't say to me they were a bad thing.
I'm sure like putting bags on scales ... i'd manage to do it :rotfl:Strange one about people not putting bags on scales first.

Whereas some people press start, THEN put their bag on the scale, then huff and puff ... even though the instructions specifically tell them what to do.0 -
I get more annoyed at the middle classes who have just discovered Aldi and Lidl, who despite the big signs telling them to pack their bags at the counter away from the till still spend ages holding up the queue while they carefully pack.
Lidl and Aldi are cheap for a reason, and that includes minimising the time spent at the till so they can shovel more people through. If you don't want to chuck it in the trolley at speed, stick to the Mr T. Etc.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Yes, it is. Sainsburys self scan are a nightmare. Regardless of tapping 'I am using my own bag' the scales constantly come up with unexpected item in bagging area.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

The London 'local' ones aren't designed for that purpose - especially if you have a basket or one of those 'baskets with wheels'. There's very few trolleys! Despite them still being a decent sized!
Luckily the one I use has self service and it's very efficient and error free so far! The big barcodes really do help!
As for people packing after they shop, my Sainsburys Local has people doing that ALL the time, it's really annoying as they're usually very slow! I might do it if I've got a couple of items and all I've got is my tote bag with stuff in already (like my water bottle). But I'm very quick - I used to work on checkouts!0 -
Never used one and never will, if a store cannot open a till I am happy to leave my shopping and go elsewhere, admittedly it wastes my time but they have to put the items back. It’s the old fashioned thing called customer service and before anyone says anything I have worked in retail for over 35 years. You scan for them next thing they will be handing out boxes of produce for you to put out while you shop. In France some of the stores have spring loads fronting racks for drinks and other chilled goods.0
