Buying a car private - REG Change

Hi all.

Hope you are well ?

I am looking to buy a car private for the 1st time and i have found one and its perfect.
I am traveling down from Glasgow to Middlesbrough meet the gentleman this weekend.

I have myself a checklist for the car and will give it a thorough test drive before i part with any cash.

My only concern is the owner has taken his private registration off the car and applied it to his new car. He doesn't have the new V5 from the DVLA and because of this the default plate doesn't show on any checks. The private one still does for now.

Any advice on the situation would be appreciated.

  • He must show you the paperwork from the DVLA showing the plate being changed.

How do you know the car is perfect, you haven’t seen it yet. Good luck with the purchase, don’t appear too keen and be sure to check it out carefully. You’re in a good position because I doubt he’ll find another buyer this side of 2020 however many other calls he’s said he’s had.

Glasgow to Middlesbrough is a long way to go for a car. I hope it is worth your travelling expenses and time?

Buyer beware & I would not buy until he has the V5 with correct registration.

  • Don't go until seller has V5 document in new reg plate.

    You mean HPI checks?

The MOT history should show under the "new" registration, the DVLA change is pretty much instant.

He should still have the "old" V5 with the private reg. that will link to the VIN numbers, and a little chitty from DVLA that says he can buy numberplates for the "new" reg (which will have the date he changed it on it), so I don't think buying it is any more risky- a logbook loan won't show anyway, and you will know how long he owned it etc from the old V5, but you won't be able to tax it online without the current V5.

You may be able to with paper forms at the Post Office, but make sure that boxes for "I am the new keeper" are all ticked.

It is only £60 and 3-4 hour driver plus i like going a drive at the weekend.

I'm afraid if i don't get it done this weekend i won't be able to go back down until mid January 2020.

Yes the HPI checks. As much as the guy seems nice i don't trust anyone.

Well i have asked him to send me a picture of the old V5 just to make sure everything else tally's up in that regards. Just though it was strange the Private Reg comes up on searches but the original plate didn't.

    Quite right :D

The HPI database takes a while to catch up. I take it you don't have much dealings with large organisations. What should be literally pressing one key on a keyboard takes weeks. :rotfl:

Your call on the purchase. Lots of people would be put off without the new V5, so you are in a good position, depends on whether you feel it is worth the risk.

Bear in mind a log book loan never shows on a HPI check, and they simply pay £25 for a replacement V5 which will have a recent issue date anyway, if the plate change is within a couple of weeks I'd say he is waiting on the V5- they usually take a week to 10 days, but the Post is even slower than usual (Is something happening to create more post?;))

Also, as far as I can tell from here, HPI never refund people under their guarantee anyway.

If it definitely his car, at his address, and has been there for years, is HPI clear on the VIN (careful with the private reg, it may mean the current car is clear or this one, so match the VIN) and the plate change is very recent I'd be as satisfied as if the V5 had an issue date of 2 weeks ago.

He only took off the plate last Thursday. Its not even that good of a private plate as well.

The private Reg OH54 FYA comes up on all the checks as the car and everything matches. Make. Year. Mot ect. HPI check was all good as well.

The new car is a BMW 680.

Its the exact car i'm looking for with all the right trims ect but.... just not feeling it with all these hurdles.

Don't buy it if you are not happy.

The only hurdle is he doesn't have the current V5, he will in a few days, ask him to let you know when it arrives, then go and buy it, but you risk someone else buying it in the meantime- not a problem if it is fairly common, there is always another one somewhere.

I'd be put off by the long journey more than no V5. ;)
