I didn't know whether to laugh or to swear - so I did both. Polite version - what a nerve. Whilst I am sure this is a worry, I wouldn't worry too much as they need to keep this person well so that they can keep any unearned income they have been providing for as long as possible. Now there is a cynical statement for you.

"Sorry I won't be flying over, I'm too busy consulting the police on where relative's money has gone xx"2

There is only one reply to that and if you will excuse me it involves intimate relations and travel.

Evening all! Thanks again for affirming for me that this situation is grim. @foxgoves I hope you enjoyed your night out. I'll pop over to your diary and read all about it.mrBC and brother 1 are meeting tomorrow (the person requesting money is brother 2). Brother 1 is very sensible and has had the measure of brother 2 for a long time. This is probably why brother 2 hasn't asked brother 1 for money for their parent's upkeep. Both MrBC and Brother 1 are very blunt and neither are intimidated or concerned about falling out with Brother 2, however, we are in the UK and they are in the EU so we are at a disadvantage in terms of having any idea of the day to day situation there.
so far our thoughts are that we will express concern about how this situation has happened and request detailed clarification of why their parent's pension is no longer sufficient for their "upkeep". What are the other people who share the house contributing to the bills and running of the household? Brother 2 and another sibling and their partner all live there rent free and bill free! There will be an almighty mess when elderly parent passes away and the estate has to be dealt with.
other thoughts are mostly rants and are proving cathartic but not necessarily useful.Enjoyed a swim this morning, then whizzed into Lidls for cat food because sometimes they have the temerity not to have exactly the right combination of flavour and jelly/gravy to please the cat. That could have caused a very bad Christmas but luckily all is well.
planning to wrap a few more presents tonight whilst listening to my book. It's so well written and read that it's making me laugh out loud.4 -
Hopefully only attempted extortion.

@badmemory - it's an insidious approach because it implies that their parent needs the money and will be the beneficiary. Of course, if that were the case we would want to help but it's not the case and I categorise this as emotional blackmail. I dread to think what their parent's bank account would show but I don't think we will be able to access that information.2

I certainly wouldn't like to be in your situation & having to make a decision on what to do. Definitely seems to be a no-win situation. I suspect you will feel bad either way which makes the whole thing even worse.

Sounds a nightmare. I wouldn't fork out.
