  • Sorry I didn't see this in time but I hope my retrospective autocorrect vibes at least got you the slightly embarrassing draw, though it's pre season nonsense and doesn't actually count.

Agree, @Blackcats - Back in the day, we wouldn't have looked twice at a £12 saving. I think once we start the process of debt-busting, staying solvent & saving, we really begin to understand those small aggregate gains.

@PennysIntoPounds - definitely 100% agree about this pre-season nonsense where getting thumped by a team from north of the border definitely can't count.

@foxgloves - yes it's quite interesting to keep our £'s rather than giving them to all the commercial enterprises who are clamouring to get  my £'s into their coffers.

as an example yesterday I had the car insurance renewal quote - up by £50.  Via £co I found a quote that was £100 cheaper with £45 cashback.  By the time I got around to finalising it today it was £106 cheaper with the same cashback.   When I cancelled the renewal I got a message saying they might be able to give me a better price - why not give me the best price to start with???

we went to Lidls today to spend enough to hit the £250 monthly spend which will give 10% off our next shop.  It means I owe July's grocery budget £8 from August's budget.  Must remember to jiggle that around when allocating money on 1st August.

  • Marvellous work on the car insurance!
Annoying and sad that we live in an age where loyalty isn't rewarded with a best price straight off though.
I'm permanently fuming about built in obsolescence, it's shabby enough ripping off customers but knowing you're getting rich deliberately selling poor goods that are constantly all going into landfill forever is something else. Where did we go so wrong as a society?!

Well done on the car insurance. With you about finding it annoying when someone belatedly says they can give you a better deal.

Feeling happy with a good MSE start to August.  Only 28 days to keep up the good work 🙃

an ISA matured and I took a bit of time to look around for the best deal for the money.  Was tempted to just leave it where it was but managed to find a deal paying £58 more interest over the 12 months.  Not a mega huge amount but definitely worth doing.  I apply the "if I dropped £58 in the street and lost it would I be upset?" test.  Of course I'd be upset so it must be worth a few minutes to secure that money for myself.

also opened a Principality regular saver (thank you @EssexHebridean for the heads up).  Again it's for 6 months and a maximum of £200 a month but it's worth it and also ensures I diligently save that money each month.  Nice boost to savings in the new year too.

July's Christmas savings pot was funded by odds and ends.  £100 from surveys, £co, round up and chase rewards.  Really chuffed with that and inspired to try to do the same again for August.  With lots of grandchildren it's a nice feeling to know that we are planning ahead for Christmas and not piling loads of money onto a credit card ready for a January credit card shocker of a bill!

I hope I don't sound smug because this money management has to be a deliberate effort on my part - still doesn't come completely naturally but feels good!

You certainly don’t sound smug. You’re looking after the finances and taking your time to make the right decision for your circumstances. Must look into the principality account. I don’t currently so any surveys but looking at yours and @foxgloves it’s appealing, not sure I’d be accepted though.

Thanks for the heads up with the regular saver account. I already have an account with that building society so it took less than 5 minutes to open. All my other regular savers are about to mature in the next couple of months so good to have a new one in place.

You don't sound at all smug. Most of us have experienced having debts to pay off in the past and appreciate the simple pleasure of adding to savings and money saving things in general.
