It is also a great favourite of Mr F. He couldn't think what it was called the other day & suggested I might like to bake a 'jam cake'.

I made the jam cake this afternoon - I used my mum's v old mcdougall's baking book for the recipe - it tastes nice but is a bit flat. I think we are used to seeing very tall, heavily iced cakes in coffee shops so I was initially a bit disappointed but MrBC declared that he much prefers the proper homemade taste compared to commercial cakes.I'll try again next week and if I achieve more height I'll send a virtual slice to @PennysIntoPounds and MrF
i sold a fairly high value item on vinted - another remnant from my spendy past. It's all parcelled up and sent off with a fond farewell on its way to its new home. MrBC has sold the item he listed on e bay and that's been posted off too. £280.00 into the coffers which I'm really pleased about. Just need to nudge, cajole and nag himself into listing some more items from the pile that has been assembled in the hall.
the overseas contingent of the in-laws have been in touch to ask us for a "cash injection". Unbelievable! Last year they asked for us to "forward" them some money. They seem to think that not calling it a loan (which implies they might eventually pay it back) but coming up with other ways of describing their scrounging somehow makes it better. This time they wanted €1500 immediately and a further €1000 at the end of April. Mr BC replied to their text and told them no! There were some expletives in there too 🙃2 -
Glad the jam cake was tasty, looking forward to my virtual slice of the next one 😊
£280 is a very nice amount indeed, well done you and Slowsort!
Unbelievable behaviour from the relatives, I am very pleased you said no and very pleased there were expletives too1 -
Appalling behaviour by the relatives! A relative was hinting the other day they were £2K short but I firmly ignored them. Well done on holding the boundary - and I'll do my best to hold mine too!
Well done on the £280 into the coffers. Always nice.
Cakes I find are quite hit and miss in terms of how far they rise. It's the taste that matters though and whether it is sufficiently moist.

Thank you all for your reassurance about the in laws and yes @EssexHebridean they are the same "family" that were so rude less than 6 months ago. Either they have very short memories or they think we have very short memories and that we are complete mugs.
we are just back from a couple of days away visiting some grandchildren. Had a happy/sad moment when 5 year old granddaughter passed me her doll which was wrapped in the blanket my mum had knitted dgd when she was a baby. Nice to see it still in use but really tugged at my heartstrings. We spent a lovely few hours with grandchildren building a den in the local woods and having a picnic. Only cost was for parking and tea and coffee for the grown ups. On our way home we visited more family and shared a takeaway.
I'm at the finishing off stage of my current knitting project. It's my least favourite part of the project but at least I now know I can do it, albeit slowly and painfully. I'm making myself wait until the neckband is finished and then I'll order the wool for my next endeavour. I've also started a granny square blanket at the request of a DGD. I was surprised she asked for a snuggle blanket as she is getting quite grown up now but I'm enjoying creating it for her based on an Attic24 pattern.
Feeling a bit peeved about my latest freecycle donation as the person who collected it messaged to say that it wasn't really what they expected and they had dumped it! There were other people who requested it and it was clean and working so I don)t really understand what they were expecting. 🤷♀️ I logged into their email expecting a thank you and frankly I'd have preferred if they hadn't said anything at all. Oh well, lesson learned and they won't be getting anything else from me. Seems such a waste though which is precisely what I was trying to avoid.2 -
Shame about the ungrateful person.
Nice about DGD and her request and positive memory of your Mum and you continuing a family tradition.Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

That's very rude of the Freecycle person! Is there a report button or email you could send it to? At the end of the day you still did a good thing and it's up to other people if they behave like idiots. They'll get their karma, even if it's just in the form of you never giving them anything again, and I doubt you're the only one
Glad you had a nice time with family, tugged heartstrings and all. The blanket sounds lovely1
