Well done for not footing the bill. Yes, I expect the £ coin counting was a ploy to get you to say you'd pay. I'm glad you didn't.

Thank you all for your endorsement of our bill paying approach.  There's another holiday saga to recount but I'm still processing it and replaying it in my mind so I'll save that for another day.  Suffice to say it involved a meal out and money 🫤

Its lovely to be home and I'm very content to be cosy with the curtains pulled, knitting resumed and candles lit.  It's amazing that yesterday we were swimming in the sea and lounging on the beach and tonight my chunky cardigan is back in use.  Mind you it's been glorious here today and almost all our washing has been done and dried.  Shopping arrived a couple of hours after we did and will definitely save us money by keeping us away from the supermarket until later in the week.

I’ve never chanced having a supermarket delivery the same day we return home just in case of delays - not that we’ve ever had one. Usually have one the following morning.

    Anyway welcome home.

Oh dear to the meal saga 😬

  • Looking forward (in a sympathetic way) to hearing about the saga. Glad you're pleased to be back, sounds lovely and cosy

Sorry to hear there was more drama.  Just spoke to my sister in Poole and she's in  a t shirt.  I've just lit the stove!

@Sun_Addict - the shopping delivery worked well as my neighbour kindly agreed to be on Ocado alert if we were delayed.  It was nice to have what we needed for a few days without having to go shopping.
@PennysIntoPounds, @savingholmes, @EssexHebridean and @lucielle - the passing of a couple of days and 1000 mile distance has helped put the saga into perspective but we have both agreed that our next visit will be even more on our terms.
so what can kindly be called a blooming cheek - a family member joined us for drinks at our hotel a couple of times and by the 2nd visit was merrily giving the waiter our room number to charge their drinks to and traded up from their usual beer to brandy and coke.

The actual saga took place on the night before we came home when a family meal out was proposed.  We chose a restaurant we have been to many times and where the menu of the day is €15.  This includes a starter, main and a drink which we thought would help those on a budget to know the cost in advance.  They could even get their coins counted out ready 🙃

When we arrived (on time) a couple were already there and were quite a way through a bottle of wine, another pair arrived and 2 more bottles were ordered.  Fortunately for us and unfortunately for them MrBC overheard them say "might as well MrBC will be paying - what a d*ck he is".
I saw his face turn puce and steam coming out of his ears so we made an excuse to walk up the road to check that we'd parked properly.  We decided not to spoil the evening for his elderly parent so we dis-engaged from the mickey takers and quietly enjoyed observing them running up the bill.  As we had an early flight we weren't drinking so we benefitted from complete clarity of thought whilst others got more and more drunk.

When parent-in-law had finished their meal we went and paid for 3 of us and just left the restaurant and took them home. 😎

We are still angry and still replaying extracts from the evening but we are both comfortable that we did well in managing the situation.  MrBC initially had a more violence based approach and I think some family relationships are irreparably damaged.  Am I  bovvered though??

Goodness me what a blooming cheek. Very well done for how you both handled it. Would love to have been a fly on the wall when they realised they’d have to cough up for it.
