On the topic of this - there's actually 6 cores but for some reason when i have all of them activated i occasionally get the BSOD. Why is that?
That's not to say it happens daily, weekly or even monthly, but it happens. Never happens when i only have 5 cores activated though.
It is'wasting time' is your opinion but as far as i'm concerned, you're wrong.
I have loads of files on my PC. .pdf's, various other documents, lots of music, lots of videos, installers, so on & so forth, scattered across a number of drives in god knows how many different folders. Some of it duplicated. So when i'm looking for something, some times it can be a bit of a PITA.
So i want to go through everything, delete what i don't need, keep what i do, put it in some sort of order so everything is easy to find.
"Ever heard of a search function" some smart !!!!! here would say, because that's how we point score (sorry i mean communicate) here. Yes i have, but it doesn't always locate the file i want and for it to do it you need to remember what the file name is, which doesn't always happen.
I'm not, i'm making a thread over it & discussing it on a message board. I'm not breaking any rules.Yeah that was pretty much my thinking behind it. I'll get round to it. It wont be today like some think i should do but it'll be soon.
My current OS is installed on a 256GB SSD. I know the difference an SSD makes over a HDD or SSHD.
I also have a 60 (or 80, can't remember now)GB SSD which is pretty much not used at all due to the capacity. I bought that not long at all after building it in 2010. The 256GB is a Samsung one, the 60GB is a Corsair one IIRC.
Great that you already have an SSD installed. Though It doesn't change my advice for a clean install of Windows 10 and then moving over only the stuff you want to keep to the new install.
Saves you from having to sort it all out beforehand.
Upgrades over the top can be more problematic.
You can use your Corsair for the Windows 10 Pro installation test. That way not having to disturb what is on your other drives nor your Windows 7 install.
This has nothing to do with your "files being all over the place". That's a different matter.0 -

Windows 10 is free so why the outlay, by the time you respond to this you could have installed 10 and spend your wise time looking for a car/phone and then ask us for which is the best car/phone and should I buy a red car or a blue phone. Merry sodding Christmas,my
apologies for me hating Christmas

To be honest, the OP was already on my 'ignore' list for some reason or another. I'm not sure why I decided to contribute on this occasion.0 -
saver, you can find this out for yourself. Use the link you created for your motherboard, go to the Asus website, register by using either a Google or other account. Put in a password, type in as few details as you can get away with, use Asus Email form to ask if your motherboard is compatible with Windows 10. That way, you get it from the horses mouth. So to speak.
At 74, I have just switched to Windows 10 myself from 7. You appear to have a good computer knowledge (and a dislike of being talked down to!) so I believe you could follow this: go here:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/139745-upgrade-windows-10-windows-7-free.html
You may have to register, but believe me there is much better help there than you will get here. No offence to other posters here, the Windows 10 site is run by very knowledgeable people.
Unless some of the contributors here also contribute there, as well as other technical forum. This forum is different in that it is kept as simple as is possible to get the same result and that it has a money saving bent.
As to writing to ASUS, ridiculous. If they don't have Windows 10 Drivers posted, they will simply tell you that it is not officially supported.
The way to find out, is to install Windows 10. He can do that with his Corsair 60 GB SSD. No need to take the long and winding road in order to get there. No need to start more threads and peruse multiple forum. Can be all done and dusted in thirty minutes. This is what I meant by wasting time and moving on.
No need to de-clutter in order to find out if there are any problems with Windows 10 on his device and no need to ask hypothetical questions on the forum, as all will be answered promptly by swapping the Samsung with the Corsair and installing Windows 10 to it.0 -
And you may decide to not move on from a thread that clearly bothers you and instead (for some reason known only to yourself) respond to it ... clearly illustrating that the thread / poster bothers you. :rotfl:debitcardmayhem wrote: »but of course you may just abandon this thread , or then again you may just decide to mess the forum up with your deliberations on a car/phone.
Only time will tell.
I don't even need to trace it back. I can tell you right now.EveryWhere wrote: »To be honest, the OP was already on my 'ignore' list for some reason or another. I'm not sure why I decided to contribute on this occasion.
You'll have come in with an attitude on one of my threads so i'll have responded in kind. This may have gone back & forth, you wont have liked it & you'll have ignored me.
That's how they all go, as i don't give anyone attitude on here or just in general unless they come to me with one first.
But anyway, for your post before that one - if putting it on the 60GB SSD, do i need to use my Windows 7 licence for it (as in will the licence then be tied to the Windows 10 install, rendering the Windows 7 pretty much useless), or can you 'trial it' (Windows 10)?0 -
You can install Win 10 without entering the key to test the drivers and check what works and what doesn't.JustAnotherSaver wrote: »But anyway, for your post before that one - if putting it on the 60GB SSD, do i need to use my Windows 7 licence for it (as in will the licence then be tied to the Windows 10 install, rendering the Windows 7 pretty much useless), or can you 'trial it' (Windows 10)?0 -
Superb. I'll have a play over the weekend. You can install Win 10 without entering the key to test the drivers and check what works and what doesn't.
Actually i've just had a search for Windows 10 install & it gave me this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 which says i need a licence to install it.
I'm not saying you're wrong but i've clearly got the wrong link. Which one should i be using that doesn't need a licence?0 -
They ask for the key so that they can redirect you to the download page. This is just to download the files, it does not require a license for the installation.JustAnotherSaver wrote: »Superb. I'll have a play over the weekend.

The easiest thing to do is to go to that page from a Windows 10 computer, then follow the instructions to download the setup files.
If you don't have a Windows 10 computer, follow this link, it explains how to get the setup files without entering the key: https://www.howtogeek.com/427223/how-to-download-a-windows-10-iso-without-the-media-creation-tool/
Note that in this case it downloads the ISO file, not the media creation tool, so you will need to burn the file on to a DVD or use a program to create a bootable USB drive yourself.
EDIT: actually, you can try to use your Windows 7 key when the website asks you. It will not invalidate the key or use the key during the installation process.0 -

Thanks for reminding me, even though I still don't remember. It's really not that important to me, it just saves me from wasting my time with intransigent or unnecessarily argumentative people. You'll stay on ignore and I'll ignore this thread.
If it was just for wasting my time, I would have continued to help. But since you deemed that I came in with an attitude(obviously your interpretation and not necessarily the reality), I'll leave it at that.
I already explained to you what you do about the licence and activation. Perhaps you can go back in order to take a look.0 -
Don't get upset because i cleared something up for you. You said you weren't sure so i thought i'd help you out.EveryWhere wrote: »Thanks for reminding me, even though I still don't remember. And i assure you it will have been the reality. It always is and not just you. It comes in different ways - people moaning i made the thread, people moaning i should already know the answer (well why am i asking then?), people moaning i didn't take the first answer (but then you always get told to not believe the first thing put to you anyway - it isn't necessarily correct), people moaning i haven't done XYZ, people moaning i haven't given enough info, people moaning i've given too much info, people moaning because they love to moan, people just not hitting that X in the top corner when something has upset them so much.
It comes in different ways as you see but it is likely to have been one of them.
Of course there are thankfully a small number of people here who just help for the sake of helping and have no attitude whatsoever.0 -
Good stuff. Plan:
Download the Media Creation tool from Microsoft.
It will guide you through downloading the (x64) Windows, and putting it onto a bootable 8GB stick. You're stick will be wiped, obviously.
Boot from the stick, install Windows onto a blank drive. The installer can wipe it if you want.
It will ask you for a Key. You can click 'I don't have a key' or similar, and it will continue to install.
When it's installed, you've got ages to activate it, don't worry about that. The easiest way I can think of to make sure you've got drivers for everything is run Windows Update, until it says you're up to date. That will include umpteen drivers for umpteen devices and it's very likely all your stuff is in here. Wait until all this is done, then plug anything else in, one at a time. Windows will try to find and install drivers for it. If not, only then do you need to start hunting the web.0
