Sooner or later i'll have to switch to Windows 10. I don't know whether it's likely to be a major issue i'm on 7 in terms of online banking but anyway.

My PC is quite old. I built is back in 2010. I had a look on the motherboard manufacturer website & the most recent drivers for the motherboard are from 2012.

I was reading a thread on a computer forum today talking about compatibility issues they were having regards the BIOS and drivers and how they needed to get new drivers from somewhere as they were having Windows 10 compatibility issues.

So this boils down to the question of how likely i am to be having a problem with Windows 10 on an 'old' machine. How likely i will have to replace the motherboard or indeed build a totally new PC (something i was considering but not yet decided on).

It will be no issue at all in this regard

You could always try it and see what happens. Back everything up so if it doesn't work you can go back to Windows 7 while you decide what to do.

You don't have to switch to Windows 10, other operating systems are available.

    Crazy. 2010 is almost new.

Did you not think it worth posting the actual Motherboard details in order to get a definitive answer to your question?

Otherwise.... how long is a piece of string?

So in what regard would it be an issue? In terms of hacking the PC and gaining access to files?

True, but they're often Linux ones.

Funny that, i keep getting told that everything in the tech world is 'old' if it's existed for longer than 5 minutes.

At least that's what i get told on a computing forum. Maybe it's full of young geeks who think everyone should have the latest and greatest of everything and anything below this is worthless?

I did, but then i realised that whatever i do on this forum generates a whinge and a moan so hey ho at least we're being consistent. If i post it it's not needed to answer the question, if i don't then it is.

    But anyway here you go.

There are certain uses for a computer that require something decent in the first place and relatively up to date - gaming for example.

But if the main aim is to just go on the internet and type the occasional letter, you don't need oodles of processing power for that.

With regards to the motherboard you posted, I used to have one of those exact models, until it died. It ran Windows 10 happily, in fact Windows 10 ran quite happily on technology that that was three years older than what that uses. So you should be fine.

Strange one. Never seen anyone else online with that motherboard before. Not to say i expect to be the only person in the world with it but even still.

I don't really game these days. I built this PC with occasional gaming in mind, which is what i did but these days i just don't have the time/desire for it. Not a fan of a lot of these modern games to be honest. I sold my PS4 last Xmas after using it as a blu-ray player in the 1-2 years that i owned it.

However, i am looking at compressing a lot of files i've ripped with MakeMKV. They currently take an absolute age on this machine. 5 hours is the norm. Some times it can take longer - i've had 10 hours before today, with settings that usually end up as a 5 hour process. Maybe it was just having a hissy fit that day but still, if i can realistically bring those 5 hours down to 1 or 2 then i'd be interested (without dumbing down the Handbrake settings that is).

There's a lot of competition and varieties in the motherboard market, but they are all mass manufactured so I'm not sure why you think its a surprise that somebody else just happened to have had one at some point; computer repair shops that stock these things and sell three different computers will probably all have the same motherboard in them.

With regard to Handbrake, unfortunately that will always be a slow process. I now have a Ryzen 3 configuration that does the Handbrake thing and compression for the most recent Blu-ray I did was done in 95 minutes, and that was over a network to a NAS device; I dare say would have probably been done quicker if it was on a local drive.

However I use it as a gaming machine too which was the original purpose for building it. Handbrake was a later thing.
