Millions of shoes at the bottom of our stairs. How do you store yours?

  • No shoes worn inside so I have a slimline cupboard in the hall just deep enough to store a pair of boots front to back style, not left to right, if you understand me. All several dozen pairs of shoes are in clear plastic bags and stacked up on top of each other on the top shelf. Boots likewise on the bottom shelf. Wet shoes and boots are left in the porch til dry then put in their bag and popped in the cupboard. This way most frequently worn pairs are on top, others have to be searched for.

Takes up less space and holds more than a conventional shoe cupboard or one-layer system.

There's a small slimline hall bench with a rack underneath, and this is where guests' shoes go. I keep a plastic storage box with several pairs of those washable cheap Ikea slips-ons for guests to use while they're visiting. Frequent visitors bring their own slippers, as do I when visiting friends who also have hardwood floors. In Norway and Finland, where I have family, this is the norm. But their shoe cupboards are bigger because of snow- and ski-boots!

Im dreadful, I leave my shoes by whatever door Ive walked on by

Well thems my shoes I wear to and from work, wellies for work left there

Other shoes are taken upstairs to the bedroom, those that Im wearing more often then not are on the bottom shelf of a bookcase, the rest are in the wardrobe
  • We have a wooden chest/box you lift the lid on that lives under the coat rack and all shoes get chucked in there and school bags live on top. You have to rummage for your shoes but it keeps the hall tidy.

  • I have this shoe bench near my front door - it's a bit cheap and cheerful, but much better than seeing the shoes all over the floor, and the young ones can sit on it to put their shoes on.
