Boiler 7 year warranty and guarantee not filled in by gas engineer

Hi folks

The plumber I used to fit our new boiler (who is gas safe) has had his hands on the forms to complete for warranty and guarantee for weeks. Everytime I met I asked him to bring the forms (filled and signed). We had a falling out as he kept letting us down, never turning up, excuse after excuse and all came to a head and told him to sling his hook (not just for this but for other substandard work in the bathroom and ensuite which he constantly wouldn't take responsibility for and blaming others).

I demanded he post or put through letterbox the forms from the manufacturer that this be signed.

Well, he did put the forms through the letterbox but they're empty and so basically now I have a boiler without the necessary info for my 7 year warranty with the manufacturer.

Does anyone know where I stand on this? Would greatly appreciate any assistance. Thanks.

Phone up the manufacturer and ask them to send you warranty forms?
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

The op has the forms but not certification for the fitting of the boiler.

What use would that be though? The plumber who installed the boiler returned the forms, just didn't fill in his details and signed anything, which is what's required to fulfill the warranty and part of the commissioning of boiler in case we have any issues down the line.

Was the boiler commissioned and the benchmark form completed?

If not, then it may be worth contacting Gas Safe to report him - perhaps threatening to do so will encourage him to commission the boiler properly.

The warranty can usually be registered directly with the manufacturer (may differ depending on manufacturer). But you will need the benchmark form completed for it to be valid.

I presume you have paid his final bill?

I would contact the manufacturer and ask for their assistance.

I would name and shame on social media. That may affect his reputation and business.

  • We registered our boiler warranty ourselves after the benchmark form was completed. In the process we realised that the completion certificate had not come through and when we chased this up with the person who installed it it turned out he’s forgotten - easily rectified, he submitted it to Gas Safe and the certificate turned up a few weeks later.

You do need to get the plumber to complete the benchmark certificate. He should have all of the necessary readings from when he commissioned the boiler. I would also check with Gas Safe that he has notified them for building regs purposes too.

He sent me his invoice for the works last week which in itself was more than we expected.

Told him I'm not paying a penny until the paperwork has been filled and signed. Not sure if I have to pay or he has to sign so bit of a stalemate. As I said, not sure where I stand as otherwise have a worthless boiler.

Plumber's supposedly one of the best in the area I've moved to but have found him (and his team, which included one of his lads smoking a joint in our home - neither missus or I smoke which made me very angry) to be shockingly bad. He'll simply not take any responsibility for anything and seems to think he's done a 'great' job

Seems we only got half a story

He has completed installation and the boiler works?
Why are you refusing to pay?
    It is certainly not "worthless".
When I had a new boiler installed, I got paperwork AFTER I paid the invoice.
Plumber is out of pocket for the materials and labour.
Perhaps he suspects after he signs paperwork you will never pay.

Why is his invoice higher than expected>
Do you have a written estimate?
    Extra work?

I doubt he'd complete the forms....some of his guys I've gotten to know won't work for him again as he hasn't paid their wages.

Funny thing is, I've had to ask a good friend of mine who is a plumber to re-do his pipework from boiler to accommodate the ikea cupboards I wanted to put up (plumber knew I intended to put wall cb's up and told him the dims). I even drew a template of said cupboards on the walls so he knew to put his pipework within those areas. My mate came round and basically said that his attempt at plumbing was dreadful (in other words) and spent half a day sorting it for me.

Yes, he sent a quote but there were some extras which I saw him do in a two-three hours (such bits I could've done) and have totaled nearly £400.

I have a bad feeling that if I pay, I'll never get these forms. That's my feeling on it anyway.

Why not contact him and agree that he signs the paperwork and you will hand over the cash he is due to get the problem sorted.
