it can be either (attendance is not mandatory) , but if you do not attend you run the risk of the claimant persuading a judge in all sorts of ways and you may find they claim added costs that you can and would object to if you were there
not attending and losing can prove very costly to a defendant0 -
If you want to win, go along. It is great fun; interesting and stretches your knowledge.
The person who reported the delightful experience today was just an ordinary lady and so am I, and I really enjoy these cases. You only have one to read up on, and one to win.
I challenge you not to be inspired by this person's hearing report, which is normal for us (but she was terrified this morning when she arrived at court, at first):

Well worth the time and such a good role model for others in the family to see that when you are scammed you DO NOT pay the scammer to make them go away. However, it will only be your case to fight, if the keeper does this, assuming you were driving:Get the keeper to name you as the driver, giving your address, if they have a problem with ignoring scam letters and won't want to defend in court.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Hmm, doesn't sound like my idea of fun! We're both self employed so taking a day off work (to attend court) is just not possible, and would cost way more than the initial fine. I really appreciate everyone's help on here but I think I'm going to reluctantly call it a day on this one. I've got out of parking charges before with the help of MSE (at least 3 times that I can think of) but they were all very simple. I will however complain to my MP, it's the least I can do. Sorry to let you all down!0
