Basic sim-only classic PAYG needed - who to go for?

Interestingly, I have just managed to activate an O2 Classic PAYG SIM that I've just bought on a well known auction site for 99p, and managed to put £10 of credit on it.
My wife's old emergency Nokia (kept in her car) was on Orange/EE on their PAYG but, because we didn't use it for 6 months, they cancelled the number and kept the credit.
I was under the impression that you couldn't sign up to Classic anymore, but it looks like you still can if you buy one of these old SIMS.
There seem to be plenty for sale at the moment.
I did the same, moving from Orange on the wife's emergency phone after the supposed deadline. I suspect all of the sims will work for now although there's no guarantee that O2 won't drop it entirely at some point in the future. Amazon still sell them from 4 pence up with free delivery.0 -

Considering with PAYG you still have to top up and make calls every few months. There is no true set and forget PAYG option.
You only have to make a charge event every 84 to 180 days depending on provider.
With 3 and O2 Classic that could be using voice at 3p, text at 2p or data at 1p.
With Asda that could be using voice at 8p, text at 4p or data at 5p.
Vodafone PAYG 1, 20p minimum for any of the three choices.
So from a little as 1p for six months, ID would cost £24.00 over the same period.0 -

Well that's OK if the credit never expires then. Until you do need to make a call and your £2 credit isn't enough and you end up topping up a tenner anyway.0 -

Credit does not expire if a chargeable event is made within the time-scale.
Where does £2 credit come into this?
Anyway £2 would cover a very long call.
Top up from £2 to £10 depending on network and SIM.
You need to so some research.0 -
Seems like a lot of work having to put it in your diary to remember when to make a call just to keep a sim active. Or when you forget and having to sweat about who still does a no frills sim card.
£4 a month for piece of mind is worth it.0 -
Well, in my case, a £10 top up on O2 Classic PAYG lasts at least two years. If I had to pay £96 for that period (£4 x 24) then I think that I can mange to put a reminder in the diary.
Each to their own!0 -

No effort at all. One quick usage every six months to keep it alive,Deleted_User wrote: »Or when you forget and having to sweat about who still does a no frills sim card.
Why forget?Deleted_User wrote: ȣ4 a month for piece of mind is worth it.
£48 per year compared to £0.02, no comparison.
