I run in all weather so my trainers get both soggy and smelly very regularly. I simply soak them in a bucket with bio washing powder and hand-warm water for several hours or overnight, then rinse. It does the job just fine.

  • I had this last year when we went camping and it rained all week. Think the wet reacts to the glue and it smelt like cat pee!! It was vile.
Anyway I put a load of bicarb inside the shoes and left for ages to absorb the smell. May also help if you can dry the shoes out properly, say in an airing cupboard?

I have some Nike stability trainers that I bought via a podiatrist, who fitted them with inner soles as well as orthotics. They are grey/silver with (once) yellow markings and are looking seriously grotty from overwear.
I have tried gentle cleaning with hand washing soap but it didn't do much good.
How can I get them looking a lot cleaner and better please without ruining them? They cost about £80 so don't want to have to buy a new pair if poss. thanks!

Have you tried washing up liquid or hair shampoo? They may be slightly stronger. Or a babywipe. We used to clean white trainers with cif.
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

  • Are they leather or canvas?

Ive washed trainers in the washer before and not had any problems,( both leather and canvas types ) but just be carefully not to use a wash thats too hot.

ive also used a old tooth brush and liquid soap in the past for more of a spot clean on canvas trainers.

  • I wouldn't put them in the washing machine.

What about scrubbing them with soapy warm water and a nail-brush?
  • I saw a picture of trainers on my bottle of Cif the other day which surprised me (it was an example of what it gets clean, iyswim). It brings everything else up clean here, I guess it's the abrasive. I haven't tried it myself. I have washed trainers in the washing machine before but none that are expensive. They always seem a bit misshapen afterwards but maybe that's just me??
