What happens if I can't get the gas reading on the last day I move but only 5 days before?

Don't you need the reading at the end of the tenancy not the day you leave?
Perhaps there are plans for that in the agents check out arrangements and you are being 'premature' trying to get an early reading?
If not buy the key for goodness sake and reassure yourself. A reading within a week or so should give you a good idea and 'proof' for later if anyone tries to claim a large amount.0 -
Best to just buy an FB key. They do the whole range on Amazon for a couple of pounds each. You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.0

Add a few units to Thursdays reading and use that. It'll be close enough.0

The reading is to be taken today, thursday; and I will be here friday, saturday, sunday, monday morning using gas throughout those few days.
The supply companies will overlook a few units' discrepancy here and there when customers change over, rather than bother to demand/refund tiny amounts just because readings are slightly different.0 -

Put on a jumper? I've lived for the last three years in a flat without any heating. I think you'll survive.0 -

The reality is that for around 4 days the gas usage isn't going to be extortionate.
You may even find that its actually all done via mart meters and reading are also obtained by the supplier that way.
"Reading" a meter nowadays is becoming an obsolete thing ….if you have provided a forwarding address you may find that the energy supplier will send you an adjusted bill once they compare your meter reading with that of the reading for the new tenant so budget maybe upto £20 for that if it arrives.
Between today and Monday, you don't need to stop putting your heating on but you just need to be mindful that should you be required to cover the cost you should pay.
Be sensible about your energy consumption and make sure you do turn things off when you leave.
I would also expect that once your keys are returned the management company will again read the meter as part of the check out process.
You could always ask the management company to email you evidence in the form of a photograph of the meter reading as confirmation of the final reading in the absence of you being allowed to read the meter yourself.
If there is a dispute of an amount larger than you were expecting on the final bill you should then be able to tally the readings up.in S 38 T 2 F 50

If there is more than a slight discrepancy, the Data Collector (I think) or whoever it is who co-ordinates readings when you switch suppliers/change address will sort it out. This is in place so one never pays for the same energy twice. It can be confusing as, even if you provide exact meter readings on your way out to your next place, they are not always used. Sometimes this faceless body comes up with arbitrary figures which both the losing and gaining energy companies have to use. I know this bit because I switched suppliers recently.
In short, OP, I would stop stressing about something so minor and, ideally, get these management types to let you photograph the meters when they can provide access. Failing that, you will just have to use whatever readings they provide but I would have a conversation with your energy provider just to put your mind at rest. After all, if you physically cannot read the meters yourself, they have the option to do it themselves or deal with it later.
Good luck with your move and here's hoping you have meters you can read whenever you like in your new place. HTH.0 -

+1. Why make a drama about something that is so easily solved?0
