What happens if I can't get the gas reading on the last day I move but only 5 days before?

I am not able to access the gas meter myself in this apartment building and I asked the building managers to take the reading for me.

They went gung ho and didn't ask me when I need it and said they are going to get it for me tomorrow (thursday) when I won't be leaving til monday, even though I already told them in the previous email I would be leaving on monday.

Is this much of an issue?

    What 'people'?

If you are still there on Monday read it yourself then. Better than the 'people' reading it tomorrow!

When does the tenancy end (or the sale Complete)? Friday? If you genuinely can't get it read on the actual day, submit Monday's reading and request a final bill. Any discrepancy between your reading and the next tenant/owner/landlord's will be minimal and you can resolve it easily if it's an isue.

    I meant the building management.

If I could read it myself I would and wouldn't have needed to ask them :rotfl: . The door is locked and they only allow the management to access it although they told me today that I can do it myself if I get a FB1 key. That seems stupid to me though to buy it just to read it once.

The tenancy ends at the end of next week however I am moving on monday - having left a few days buffer in case they were needed but I will be nearly 2 hours away and no plans to return here.

Turn the heating down as low as possible (if the weather is likely to freeze) and then submit final readings when you leave.

Any gas used will be negligible whilst the property is unoccupied I would think.

So you are suggesting I should live in discomfort for the final 5 days before leaving?

What is the result if living normally? I thought the different of 5 days would be negligible anyway even if using at normal rates?

Will I end up having to pay another bill maybe a couple months later when the new tenant comes ie only when they get another exact reading from somewhere? I don't really understand how I will be able to square up with them if I don't have exact readings on my move out day (whether I am skrimping on gas or not).

I don't know the answer, but have you spoken to the energy company about this? I'm sure you won't be the first to have this question.

have you asked the neighbours if any of them have a key?
An answer isn't spam just because you don't like it......

No. What neighbors talk to each other in big city buildings? Everyone just pretends the other does not exist unless something extraordinary is happening.

Well I spoke to one old lady a few times but I don't know where she lives in the building.

What? Are you saying you decided to rent the place without speaking to the neigbours first?

    What a crazy idea.

Eh? From what I can make out, you are leaving the property a few days (Monday) before your tenancy runs out (the following Friday).

I am suggesting you provide a final reading when you leave and that if you turn the heating down (or off) the difference in readings will be minimal from when you move out until the end of tenancy.

look if the landlord or next tenant submits a reading marginally diferent to yours and complains, just slip them a fiver and move on.
