There is a constant repetition by some in the media that EVs are expensive, so reductions are welcome to expand the market. The fact that these lower prices are achieved by 'discounting' is irrelevant to the switched on consumer, although the legacy manufacturers may be suffering predictable pains.

With the expected changes to VED, so that the "expensive car" premium will include EVs as well as ICE from next April, I wonder whether that will make any difference to the list prices of EVs.
It never did with ICEs, but (at least when the premium was introduced), the ICEs affected were, well, the more premium models.  Fiscal drag has worked it's magic so there are normal family ICE cars that attract the VED
    premium.
However, I suspect the change will impact EVs far more than ICEs - there are (so far as I can ascertain but without firm figures) proportionally more EVs at >£40k than ICEs.

Good news, heavy haul BEV mining trucks.

Bad news, it would take about 40 days to granny charge its 1,900kWh battery.

Good news, a 6MW charger can do it in ~30mins.

Lightning fast charger: Fortescue 6 MW DCFC for electric heavy equipment

Global mining and metals company Fortescue is driving the technology behind massive, all electric heavy equipment solutions with an all-new 6 MW DC fast charger that can charge this massive haul truck’s 1,900 kWh battery in less than thirty minutes. (!)

Jointly developed by Fortescue and heavy equipment giants Liebherr, the 6 MW (6000 kW) DC fast charger is twice as fast as the 3 MW prototype shown last year during CES, but was just a small part of the massive $4 billion electric equipment deal the two companies signed at MINEexpo this past week. That money will eventually pay for a total of 475 zero emission Liebherr machines, with a breakdown of 360 autonomous battery-electric trucks, 55 electric excavators, and 60 battery-powered loaders.

The big news, though, has to be that game-changing 6MW charger.

“Fortescue has developed the stationary fast charging solution to support the autonomous battery-electric truck,” the company said this week. “Equipped with robotic connection options, the charger can provide up to 6 MW of power and charge the current battery-electric T 264 [a 240 ton rigid haul truck we covered back in July] in 30 minutes.”

More big BEV buses on their way.

Go-Ahead transport group orders 1,200 ‘green buses’ from Wrightbus

Transport group Go-Ahead has announced a £500m investment in up to 1,200 UK-built electric buses from Northern Ireland-based Wrightbus.

The order is expected to support about 500 manufacturing jobs and create a new line at Wrightbus, based in Ballymena, Northern Ireland.

The zero-emissions buses are expected to be deployed in Go-Ahead’s operations around the UK over the next three years, including in London, Plymouth, Gloucestershire, East Yorkshire and the Isle of Wight.

For those interested, here's a rundown of European sales for September.

    'Electrified' includes HEV's.

Europe EV Sales Report — In September, 60% of European Automotive Sales Were Electrified

Some 295,000 plugin vehicles were registered in Europe in September, rising 6% YoY, which represents the EV market’s return to growth for the first time since April. This is even more significant when you consider the overall market fell by 4%, to 1.1 million units.

Interestingly, BEVs are the ones pushing the market upwards, growing 14% YoY to 212,000 units. PHEVs remain stuck in red, falling 9% in September to 83,000 units.

Looking at the remaining powertrains, only HEVs were positive, growing 12% YoY, while petrol was down 19% and diesel continued to free fall, dropping 24%.

A slight win for EVs in the budget.
    BIK remains low until 2028.
Increases to first year VED excludes EVs.

There was a weird dearth of green initiative in the budget for a government that I thought was going to prioritise that area?

I think it is tricky trying to chart a new course when everyone is "all hands to the pumps" trying to fix the leaks.

    Whereas Autocar reported:

Jato’s figures show that EVs accounted for 17.3% of European car sales last month, up from 14.8% last year, but electric car sales are down 5.8% for the year to date and their market share has fallen from 14% to 13.1%.

edit: CleanTechnica reported 6% growth in plug in vehicles YoY in September 2024 but reference to their own report last year shows the growth was in fact 2.4% (from 288k to 295k).

Auto sales were pretty bad in October, but at least BEV's did OK.
