Yes, not only was the policy a government mandate but campaigning on the ground involved such disinformation that even EV drivers thought they would be hit by the ban. I can't find it now but sure I saw a reference that even a 2003 Corsa would meet the pollution standards.

On the EV boards you will find a degree of cynicism regarding the oil companies based on the standard of EV charging offered by BP and Shell. I'm sure the EV charging divisions have committed staff, but perhaps the main boards aren't as committed.

In other vehicle charging news, I charged mine last night; not because I'm on Agile anymore but due to Agile prices showing wind was dominating the mix and I'd allowed my battery to get a bit lower in anticipation. Small beer indeed, but scaling up it shows what is possible to reduce impacts of energy use.

Yet another nice little milestone for BEV's. In June they outsold diesel cars in the EU for the first time. The UK figures for June, were 17.9% BEV, 3.5% diesel and 3.8% diesel MHEV.

[But, has occured to me that some of the hybrid classifications may include diesels (I'm not sure).]

In June, People Bought More EVs Than Diesels In Europe For The First Time Ever

In European Union countries, the market share for diesels contracted to only 13.4 percent last month, which is considerably less than the 17.4 percent achieved in June 2022. The weaker demand allowed purely electric vehicles to surpass diesels for the first time ever. Indeed, zero-emission cars accounted for 15.1 percent of the total share, or up from 10.7 percent in June 2022. Self-charging hybrids were also more popular than diesels thanks to a market share of 24.3 percent while PHEVs represented 7.9 percent of total demand, or down from 8.2 percent in June 2022.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but I think it's making the news as it is passing into law.

Sets out the max distance between charging locations on major EU routes, also the amount of power (cumulative) required, etc, etc, and how these will increase over time.

EU passes law to blanket highways with fast EV chargers by end of 2025

From 2025 onward, the new regulation requires fast charging stations offering at least 150kW of power to be installed every 60km (37mi) along the EU’s Trans-European Transport Network, or (TEN-T) system of highways, the bloc’s main transport corridor. The fast charging network along European highways is already pretty robust, I discovered on a recent 3,000km (2,000 mile) roadtrip with a VW ID Buzz. This new law could all but eliminate range anxiety for those sticking to TEN-T roads.

Business demand for electric vehicles overtakes ICE in 2023

Data from Leasing.com shows that all electric vehicles (consisting of plugins, hybrid and battery) accounted for nearly 56% of total BCH sales enquiries in the first-half of this year. This compared to diesel vehicles which accounted for 20% of enquiries so far in 2023, a 40% reduction on the corresponding period in 2022, and petrol vehicles which took a 23% share of business demand.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were particularly in-demand, thanks in part to a preferential tax regime, accounting for just under 42% of total business contract hire demand. The Tesla Model Y, BMW iX and Tesla Model 3 were the top three most popular cars on business contract hire in the first-half of the year.

I think these are good figures for VAG (China excepted) but there are so many statistics here that it is difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff. There is still talk of 200k outstanding orders in Europe which contrasts with the somewhat negative comments we have been hearing recently about demand for VAG BEVs. Sales are poor in China but at the price point needed to sell there VAG are probably best out of that market until it settles down.

Volkswagen Group Increased Global BEV Sales In Q2 2023 By 53%

    Sales in Q1-Q2 2023:

    • Europe: 217,100 (up 69%)
    • US: 29,800 (up 76%)
    • China: 62,400 (down 1.6%)
    • Rest of the world: 12,300 (up 55%)
    • Total: 321,600 (up 48% year-over-year)

Mentioned a year ago, that Norway had successfully tested a small electrical coastal container ship (actually autonomous), but the Chinese are going bigger.

And So It Begins: 1,000-Kilometer Route Yangtze Container Ship With Swappable Batteries

There are really obvious solutions to big problems. One of those solutions is putting batteries in shipping containers and winching them on and off ships to power electric drivetrains. Recharge the containers on land in transshipment ports and winch them onto the next ship or train that needs one.
And now, a proof point. The Yangzhou shipyard in northern China, inland from Shanghai on the Yangtze River, just launched an electric-drive-only 700 container ship which will ply a regular 1,000-km (600-mile) route up and down the river and to the world’s largest container port on the Yellow Sea.

It’s not going to run all the way on batteries it carries onboard, of course. Battery energy density is increasingly good and will be multiples of today’s in the coming years, but steaming 1,000 km upstream, even in the 3.6-kilometer-per-hour average water speed of the Yangtze, is a huge energy requirement. It doesn’t have to, as there are 30 container ports along the 2,700 kilometers of navigable waterway (about twice the length of the Mississippi and three times the length of the Rhine).

Spectacular EV sales growth in Eire.

Sales of electric vehicles power up to set new monthly record as car market booms

New figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show 18,458 electric vehicles were registered in the first seven months of 2023, compared to 11,175 in the first seven months of 2022.

Of the 27,148 new cars registered in July this year, 4,161 were electric.

The total number of car registrations so far this year, at 104,641, is 20pc higher than in the corresponding period last year.
