Electric car charging points are to be installed at every new home and office across England from next year ahead of a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030

An eye catching headline indeed and thanks for posting EV.
But, isn't there always a but! Given that a vehicle can be charged from something as simple as a standard 13 amp socket then one might dare to suggest that the very same has been in place for the last half century or so!
As for the smart charging requirement then could this possibly be covered by something akin to an electronic timer such as used for other domestic 13amp appliances.
When charging from home or work then five hours at 3kW would deliver perhaps between 50-60 miles range and probably adequate for the majority of commuters for their normal daily requirements.
Current standards for new builds are as the example below

“Each dwelling with garage or driveway to be provided with charging cabling to a dedicated socket fixed to the house or garage, of sufficient capacity to enable as a minimum Mode 3 at 3.7 kW (16A), or 7.4kW (32A)”

The Govt should really be insisting on dual phase 7/11kW EVSEs otherwise we might as as well just provide a suitable connection for a 10 amp charger. Demand Supply management needs consumers to take a lot of energy when supply outstrips demand.

Electric cars ‘will need to be taxed’ to make up for lost fuel duties

The head of the Climate Change Committee (CCC) said the Chancellor will make sweeping changes to transport levies to raise revenue from battery-powered vehicles. He made the comments as the Treasury mulls a road pricing, or “pay per mile”, system.

Chris Stark, chief executive of the climate adviser, said: “Fuel duties are not where the action is any longer. I don’t expect the Government to raise fuel duty because the bigger challenge is now how road transport is taxed in a world where vehicles have no emissions.”

Volvo introduces new plug-in hybrid powertrain that increases electric-only range

Up to 56 miles on battery alone and one pedal driving. Sounds good if, like me, most of your runs are local with the occasional long trip. No need to get worked up about charging. Great for towing a caravan as well.

The Major Problem With EVs No One Is Talking About

Earlier this month, UK cybersecurity firm Pen Test Partners said that it had found cyber vulnerabilities in six home EV chargers and a large public charging network. Some of the vulnerabilities were no small potatoes.

Among the findings of Pen Test Partners was a vulnerability that could potentially make possible the hacking of millions of EV chargers simultaneously and another that exposed user and charger data for the hacker to use.

Perhaps the most dangerous vulnerability that the cybersecurity experts uncovered, however, was the possibility for a hacker to take control over millions of chargers.

“As one could potentially switch all chargers on and off synchronously, there is potential to cause stability problems for the power grid, owing to the large swings in power demand as reserve capacity struggles to maintain grid frequency,” the firm said.

E-car chargers will turn off to prevent blackouts

Now we know why National Grid are so confident EVs won’t cause black outs.

Electric car charging points in people’s homes will be preset to switch off for nine hours each weekday at times of peak demand because ministers fear blackouts on the National Grid.

Under regulations that will come into force in May, new chargers in the home and workplace will be automatically set not to function from 8am to 11am and 4pm to 10pm. Public chargers and rapid chargers, on motorways and A-roads, will be exempt.

Afraid the full article is 'protected' and I've no wish to become a subscriber even for a free trial period.

"I don’t expect the Government to raise fuel duty " ignores the fact that the Government needs to raise extra taxes to overcome covid shortfalls and they'd be able to describe extra fuel duty as a 'green' measure.

There will undoubtedly be some new 'transport levies' in the pipeline but perhaps not specific EV taxes just yet.

I had a fun day yesterday driving around the picturesque Brecon Beacons with a dozen other Tesla's. Wifey couldn't make it, as we have taken in an extra dog, so we didn't think two lab/retrievers would want to spend a day in the back of the car, so my friend came along for a play in the Tesla, and a surprise because we insured him to drive for the day.

Stupidly, I didn't think to set up and note all the trips, as this would have been entertaining over all the winding roads and climbs and descents. But when my friend took the wheel for a 12 mile drive from a beautiful rest stop, with PV and windfarms all on show, down to a distillery with Tesla destination chargers (honest, that was the real reason for the visit ;-) ), I remembered to check the trip from the last stop, and it showed an average consumption for the 12 miles of -129Wh/mile. And I thought that would be fun to post.

Also humbling to be on the receiving end of 'Tesla Power' during a fantastic stage where we were told to spread out and enjoy. Fun to dab the toes on the 60mph sections as speeds often dropped to 20-30mph. With a massive TMX about 100m behind me, I put my foot down, hit 60mph, looked in the mirror, and he was now about 20m behind and waving with a smile. Did it again twice, and we had a laugh at the next beauty spot. Boy oh boy, those big barges have serious power.

I'd also forgotten how 'interesting' is it is to drive around some of those areas, with no fencing, and loads of sheep and horses at the edge of the road, some even laying partly on the road, or as my friend (a local) described it - 'just another Saturday'.

Good weather also brought out a lot of bikers, and the noise of them when they were passing us, helped to remind me of another benefit of BEV's, though apparently the local large fluffy white 'car wreckers' haven't yet gotten used to cars without loud noises, and can actually be more spooked sometimes by them .... fair enough!
