Porsche Taycan 4S Cold Weather 70 MPH Range Test

This is an amazingly good first effort from a legacy auto-maker which puts to bed the argument that they are 5-10 years behind the market leader.

The Porsche Taycan is unique in that it's the only EV that we've tested that consistently beats its range rating - and by a wide margin, in any range test we can throw at it.

A veritable host of Tesla articles this morning

Of most interest I suspect is probably the rumour that the $25k / Model 2 / to be named / mini Tesla will be for sale worldwide. Purely my guess, but UK prices tend to be dollar to pound conversions plus some additional taxes, so maybe £30k?

Tesla’s $25,000 Model 2 Will Be Sold Globally, Tom Zhu Says

Tom Zhu, president of Tesla’s operation in China, spoke in an interview with Xinhua Net, the Chinese state media outlet, about the hot recent news that Tesla China is developing a $25,000 vehicle. In the interview, Zhu provided new info about Tesla’s $25,000 EV. He said that it would be sold globally.

Zhu said that the Tesla model will be designed with China in mind, and that construction was already in progress on a local research and development center, but that it would be sold more broadly than that.

Next an article on the continuing ramp up of Tesla Shanghai. I know it's only a number, but if Shanghai can ramp fast enough, and Berlin & Texas can chuck out a few vehicles too, then Tesla might deliver ~1m vehicles this year ...... might!

Tesla Giga Shanghai Made Almost 25,000 EVs In January 2021

Twitter user “Teslar” has just shared the news that, according to the China International Corporation (CICC), Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory produced 24,800 electric vehicles last month. This number is up 9.9% month over month (M0M) from December 2020. Tesla’s domestic sales in China last month were 15,500 units. This was mainly due to the large export volume and the slow ramp-up of the Model Y’s production capacity, Teslar noted in their tweet.

And lastly a thoroughly fun article simply comparing new Tesla S's to the earlier ones, showing how much more you now get for your money ...... sometimes less money. [Edit - meant to say that this reminds me of how the Leaf range increased about threefold as the vehicle progressed, and the range of the Zoe increased with a bigger battery, with only a small weight gain. M.]

The Tesla Model S Value Proposition Is Astounding … Again

Now let’s look at the current “base” Model S that you can buy today for $79,990. It is all-wheel-drive, has an EPA-rated driving range of 412 miles (~155% (sic ~55%) more range than its 2012 predecessor), and has a 0–60 mph time of just 3.1 seconds — 2.5 seconds quicker than its 2012 predecessor (which is a huge difference in the world of automobile acceleration). It also has a higher top speed of 155 mph — 30 mph more than the original S (for those who care about such things). On a side note, it’s wild to think that 3.1 seconds 0–60 mph is now considered the “slow” version of the Model S. To put into perspective how remarkably quick this is, if you wanted acceleration like that a few decades ago, you would have had to pony up a cool $1M for a McLaren F1 hypercar.

A welcome move in the right direction although I'm sure they will be more than £18k by the time they get to the UK. A bit like the $40k Model 3.

World’s 1st Zero-Emission Tanker Project Will Use Corvus Energy Storage System

Corvus Energy was selected to provide an energy storage system (ESS) to Kawasaki Heavy Industries for the zero-emissions electric e5 tanker it is building, the world’s first zero-emissions tanker. The electric tanker is under construction for Tokyo’s Asahi Tanker Co.

The battery-powered vessel was designed by e5 Lab Inc., which is a consortium of leading Japanese shipping and maritime services companies. One of those companies is Asahi Tanker Co. which focuses on building infrastructure services that focus on electrically powered vessels. The new vessel for Asahi Tanker is the first of two all-electric vessels that will be built from e5 Lab. It should be in service in bunkering operations in Tokyo Bay by 2022. The ships will be built by two companies — KOA Industry Co. and Imura Shipyard Co.
