Well I've posted my forms off to stepchange this morning eek.

I rang them with a couple if questions, she said once they get the forms back and do their checks it will roughly take 4 to 5 week to process if everything is ok.

She said I started the process at a good time if I would have left it till January it would have been a lot longer because it's their busiest time of the year.

So it's just a waiting game now.

Just thought I would give an update.

I posted the forms off on 3rd December signed for. I waited a couple of weeks then gave stepchange a ring just to make sure everything was ok. The lady told me all my documents were uploaded on to their computer on 11th December and they would be in contact with me in about 2 weeks but might take a little longer with it being Christmas.

I received a call this morning just asking to clarify a couple of things. She then said she would now send the documents out with a barcode and to pay the £90 at the post office and on the day I pay I should get all up to date balances of what I owe and to let stepchange know. She said I would get them in about 10 to 14 days, so all ok so far.

She did keep mentioning my water rates which are all paid and up to date, she said she needed a reference number for them but I could give her that when I've paid the £90 and given up to date balances. I'm not really sure why she needs a reference number for the water rates, I did give the name and address of my supplier, but no problem I will dig the reference number out and give it to them.

Sent holding letters to the 4 credit card companies I owe on 15th December, signed for and haven't heard a thing yet from any if them.

Feel a bit better now knowing they are sending me the barcode out etc, so I am hoping it all goes through.

You don’t need to send holding letters as your going insolvent, they have no remedy against that.

sourcrates I think I sent the holding letters more for my benefit than anything else, in the hope they wouldn't start phoning me about missed payments.

Really confused now. It was niggling away at me why stepchange asked about my water rates so phoned them back and they stated because it's a debt its got to be included in my dro!

I don't understand why its got o be included, I've never missed any payments on my water bill or any other bills, lecy, gas TV licence etc. I dont see it as a debt I see it as a bill that I pay.

So what happens if its got to be included its got me worried now.

Water rates were not included in my DRO, but after further reseach it appears to be a qualifying debt for a DRO.
As long as the total of your debt remains under the 20k threshold, there should be no problems, what is it that worries you specifically ?

Thanks for the reply sourcrates, yes the debt will still be under 20k.

Think it just shocked me that they had to be included. So not sure now how things will work. I pay £49 per month over 12 months by direct debit. I am due to get my annual bill in April then pay monthly.

I am just worried that they wont let me pay by direct debit because of the dro and they will want the full bill paid upfront.

No, it dosen`t work like that, the only thing you won`t get is credit in the form of cards and loans etc, DD`s for ulitities, and monthly payments for insurance etc will not be affected by going insolvent, you still have these options.

My life continued as normal, paying for stuff monthly, and/or by DD thoughout a six year IVA, and (later) a 12 month DRO, so life continues, try not to overthink things and you will be fine.

Well, as corny as it sounds, thats why we do it, places like stepchange can explain procedures to you, and technical detail, but its always best taking advice from someone who`s actually been through it, or is very familiar with how insolvency affects you in real life, its never as bad as you think it is.

    Good luck with it.
