  • Thank you savingholmes. Like many on here, we could go and blow these lump sums on bathrooms, cars, hols, new kitchens, but the desire to get rid of this debt is so life changing, more than any car or item you can buy. My elderley Aunt, years ago (pre MSE days) used to give me a cheque for £100 and whisper to me ' put this towards your mortgage my love' . Even back in those days she was trying to teach me the right ways!! :money:

Sounds like you had a lovely weekend! It’s so important to balance paying the mortgage and still living life, which t sounds like you’ve done. And well done on the bargain meal!

  • Thankyou BVic25 for reading so far and for your comment. It was a real treat of a weekend. Sounds terrible but we have never ever had a family shopping trip!!! We've been married 20 years too and boys are older teenagers. We just 'don't do' shopping as a past time! Historic debt problems probably why though! Never had the money or spare cash. Fortunately, to date, all spare time and weekends has been taken up with the DS's sports.

One very large part of wanting to be mortgage free is having to deal with anxiety and having a responsible role at work. The two don't often compliment each other well! So whilst not really having a choice at present and have to work, being able to have nice weekends with the kids, long country walks around our villages, odd drinks out, meals out using cl£%card vouchers all helps manage anxiety, gets me thru the working week and now try to thoroughly enjoy ourselves when not at work. Terrible I know but I live for my weekends, evenings and just love being at home. I cherish the simple things. Love being at home, pottering at home and going for walks. :o

I do try to focus on the positives of my job and work though, and there are lots of real positives, I shouldn't grumble, but life not having to operate at a senior level, full time and being so full on would be so nice.
Anyway, 4 days til the weekend ;) !

    Thanks for reading.

Aww I can completely empathise with the anxiety, I could control mind relatively well until I got pregnant and now it seems it’s here to stay. Here’s to becoming MF so you can take a step down!

BVic28, sorry to hear you also endure anxiety. not easy is it. It's only work that gives me that dreaded feeling. The closer I get to paying off mortgage, the 'lighter ' I feel. Hope it gets easier for you too. x

Not weird at all - I keep logging into my mortgage account everyday to see the balance (always slightly hopeful it’s magically reduced on its own haha)

  • So, it's mid month, spending quite a bit getting ready for Christmas, so not alot of money saving going on or mortgage overpayments sadly. A couple of wins though.

House Insurance due on 24th Dec, and renewal came through £120 more than last year's premium!! Managed to get contents and building for the whole year for £214 including legal fees and emergency cover so was pleased with that. All paid up front so no monthly payment or interest to pay. Another job done and ticked off my very long list.
Just got to move my gas and electricity now before the end of the month. So hope to make some savings on my monthly payment. Job for another day me thinks.
Read another diary today and they have a plan for 2020. So thought this a good idea and something else I can also dream about lol (in addition to my overpayments) !!

    So the 2020 plan is:
    * Make £15,280 Overpayment this year. £10k done already
    * Get £6k in the Emergency pot. You never know job wise.
    * Pay for 1 holiday abroad, probably be about £3k for 4 adults
    * Start saving for 2021 mortgage overpayment pot. Overpayment year starts 01/12/20
    * Still have a life and enjoy ourselves!

Dreams, Dreams, Dreams!! Certainly don't want to rush Christmas away but can't wait til 1st Jan and I'll be down to £58k outstanding.
