I'm with British Gas for my Gas and Electricity. I was paying £30 per month Electricity and £34 Gas monthly direct debit.

I'm mortified as I received a letter last week informing me my new charges of: £79 Gas and £38 Electricity. I'm in a one bedroom bungalow and am chronic sick unable to work.

Apparently this is based on my usage.

    Is there anyone cheaper?

    In desparation
  • I'm having a nightmare with British Gas too. I've recently started a DMP with the CCCS. I was paying $60 a month for gas(for some reason I don't have a pound sign on my keyboard! :S) and I'm $90 in credit. My payments are all up to date.
I phone British Gas today to give them my new bank details, and they ask for a meter reading. Ok no problem.......until I find out that some vandal has cut off my lock on my meter box and I can't get it open. The British Gas rep had no sympathy, and said that they would only accept a direct debit of $120 a month!!! I tried to challenge this, but he wouldn't budge and said I'd have to pay quarterly.
Is there anyway or anywhere I can make a complaint about this?? I'm worried that I have my electricity set up on monthly direct debit too (on the same account as I recently switched - kicking myself now!!!!!) and they will just take the money from my account when they feel like it!
Any advice will be much appreciated!
    Thanks :)
I'm always in the brown stuff (marmite)....only the depth varies!!! :rotfl:

I am with Scottish Power. I was paying £40pm for gas and electricity for a property that I only use at weekends. This quarter I have ended with £77 in credit. They have now reduced my monthly payment to £15.90

I have been feeling a bit peeved that I was swept up in the 'capping' frenzy last year.I had a call from my Mum,and a few other friends who had capped, asking if I had capped and to do it quick or I wouldn't be able to.

I rang EDF and capped my gas and electric. When my next bill came in I became more aware of exactly how much they were now charging.

I saw on the news this week that the gas prices were considered being reduced by some major suppliers as early as last summer.
What cheeses me off is that the suppliers still encouraged us to cap so late in the year, saying that the prices may rise further still....

I rang EDF to ask how much longer I am capped until, and therefore am in a year 'contract' for. October 2009 I am free of it.
I then asked how I could get out of that contract.
It will £50 to opt out. Either £30 for gas,£20 for electric,or the other way round, can't remember....

I feel shafted. It isn't worth paying to get out is it..

Am I alone in thinking EDF have acted in an underhand way?

EDF haven't quite told you the whole truth.
Yes there is a charge of 30 pounds for gas, and 20 pounds for electricity to come off your fixed tariff, but ONLY if you are changing supplier.
When EDF reduce prices, call them to request to come off the fixed rate and to be put on to the standard and they will not charge you.
  • im just getting my 1st house and wondered who to go with for electric and gas ............. ive read about not switching but ive got nothing to switch from ...any advice ??

    Hi brian01,

I saw the article and it is an issue that has affected many gas customers, is this something that has raised concerns regarding your own supply?

Any questions i would be happy to try and answer them for you. :)

I didn't see the programme; but now it has been brought up, are there any problems that we should be aware of ?

The issue is that some gas consumers have 5 dial (metric) meters and are being charged as if they have 4 dial (imperial) meters.

This means that they are being charged 2.83 times more for their gas usage.

A 5 dial meter will show the symbol m3 on the body of the meter and as above have 5 digits before the decimal point.

A 4 dial meter will show the symbol ft3 on the body of the meter and have 4 digits before the decimal point.

To check you are being billed correctly simply check the meter against the bills.

Your bills will either display the appropriate symbol (m3 or ft3) or show the conversion factor (for changing gas units to kWh) that should match your meter. The conversion factor is below.

    For 4 dial/imperial:

    Number of gas units
    Multiplied by 2.83
    Multiplied by 1.02264
    Multiplied by 39.2
    Divided by 3.6
Equals the number of kWh you will be charged.

    For 5 dial/metric:

    Number of gas units
    Multiplied by 1.02264
    Multiplied by 39.2
    Divided by 3.6
Equals the number of kWh you will be charged.

The figure of 2.83 is the only difference between the two as this converts ft3 to m3.

The figure of 39.2 above will vary from bill to bill as this is the calorific value and is basically relates to the quality of the gas.

I know this can be confusing, but hope it helps.:)
