You are getting fleeced by the landlord - average contracts for domestic should not be more than 11p-13p - if you are charged 20p then you are looking at a 50% increase. I would ask to see the contract/bills, otherwise definately see citizens advice- this is profiteering of the worst kind

Where does your 11-13p figure come from? Does it take into account supply area, contract type and usage? For electricity I'm paying about 19.2p for the first 225 KWh per quarter and 9.7p thereafter (on a recent fixed dual-fuel contract). 20p may therefore be about right for a low and/or fixed rate user, "fleecing" seems like inappropriate inflammatory language.
  • On state pension. Got only storage heaters in the house. Rented property, which has pre pepayed meter, which association won`t change. With Scottish Hydro Electric, Perth (a trading name of SSE Energy Supply) and the electric company can`t be changed so they say, when I tried to change it !!!!??????.

Living in one room to save electric and keep warm. No Joke.

So how could I get cheaper electric without changing the pre paid Meter ?

Is somebody telling me porkies ?
  • I have followed the MSE links to the SP offers, and got a reasonable quote. But there is no mention of the £50 cashback anywhere. Any ideas, anyone, please?

What reason were you given as to why you cannot change supplier, and who informed you?

You have to go via the special MSE link in the article.

You should see the geen circle saying earn up to £50 cashback

There should also be a link down the bottom with the t&cs which is this page:

Thanks, but it didn't work, £50 circle was there but no link to special T&Cs, no mention of the cashback in the 'more info' bits....also the saving varies hugely depending on how I 'choose' to pay; and none of the quotes match the one I was given without following hte MSE link. It doesn't surprise me; I think energy companies make it up as they go along....

I think we should beware of a trap here.

Anyone else had problems with this?

Look again. The link to the t&cs is on the RHS towards the bottom of the page. That's how I got the link to them myself!

I don't think Martin would include any form of 'trap' in his articles ;)

I thought you'd already said you got a reasonable quote?

What supply region are you in (or first part of your postcode)
What is your annual consumption in kWh?
How much were you quoted using the MSE link?
How much have you been quoted for the same tariff and payment method using another quoting service ... and what one?

The method you choose to pay may well affect the cost.
  • I agree; Martin would not link to a trap. I retract that!

Did get a reasonable quote of £162 saving using the ;Online Fixed Price Energy September 2014' tariff; then further quotes gave £20 saving, or some no saving at all. At no point was the £50 mentioned. All my quotes were done through Martin's link, no other sites involved. Also the T&C link on the quotes, at least, is bottom left and goes to their standard legal page. I have seen the MSE T&C link though; I'm meaning on the actual quote page that the link is not MSE-specific.

The other thing is that the link to the £50 offer is down near that link, below the page fold.

Ok, just tried again and it looks to be working; MSE is mentioned in the URL so I am assuming I am on the right track. Still no mention of cashback although I did 'join' via the £50 offer link. Still, the deal is a good one and I'll go for it anyway. Thanks for your help!

Oh and it does seem that the variation is due to the choice of payment method.

Just as an aside, I would advise anyone to generally ignore the "savings" quotes suggested by energy comparison sites; these depend on the "current" tariff used for the comparison and this can vary from site to site.

Always compare the annual energy costs across comparison sites because these always use the current rates associated with a tariff.

  • Question for anyone who has applied for the Scottish Power fix Martin recommended last week.

I completed the online application last week (Thursday). Whilst I wouldn't expect anything in the post by now, I never received any email confirmation from SP at the time or since. I got a confirmation number on completion of my application.

Have others had any email contact from them following their application?
