But its not as simple as price per unit is it because you have to factor in direct debit discount, dual fuel discount, once a year loyalty payment discount and initial units charged at a higher price than run on units. Then of course there are different levels of cashback available from Quidco and Topcashback compared to the energy comparison websites............

none of those are complicated to work out manually.

We're on the standard EDF dual tariff at the moment (E7)

    Comparisons show that if we:

    ditch E7 (18% night useage)
move to monthly DD from quarterly DD
    change to online saver 5

We save about £500 a year - we are high usage due to detached house with a gas AGA. Does this saving sound right? What is the best way to switch, just phone them? I guess there is no cashback if you are staying with the same supplier.

  • Personally I was on EDF v5 (Yorkshire area) and they advised me prices were being 'hiked up' (my terms obviously not theirs)...

Comparision web sites reported EDF v5 as being the best, *BUT* this was because they hadn't put their new prices into their systems as the chances were soon to be applied/a few days out of date.

What is important to me is that if you see a supplier who aren't going to penalise you if you leave them after 1 year and their prices are reasonable to the top choices then I'd go for them.

Check out the moneysavingexpert info on cashback as to who offers the most but also look at topcashback.co.uk & quidco! Work out who is cheapest then stay/go for it.

I had to have my gas meter replaced on 5/1 because it was damaged. British Gas told me that it will take four to six weeks to fully update their system with my new meter's details. Do I need to wait until that happens before I switch to a different supplier?

I switched and in the middle of the process a third company (the one owning the network here) turned up and changed the meter, when I was out at work.
It caused about 3 years of chaos BUT company A lost out because they could not prove the meter reading at the time I switched away from them.
Company C. the one owning the meter, managed to mess up the meter ID's and the house address. For about 2 years I was paying for someone else's electricity. Never did find out who was paying for mine.

The other problem was that I have a economy 7 meter but the reading that says "1" on the meter is coded as "2" on the tablet that the meter reader uses.
Guess what? They keep on trying to read it the wrong way round.
  • I've just moved into a small 2 bed house in Leeds on a monthly bill from a 1 bed flat in Scarborough on a meter which ran only on electricity. My average monthly spend then was only about £50 I have received our first estimated bill for both gas and electricity and its a total of £115, this seems a bit steep to me for just me and my boyfriend as we are both out all day at work and barely home on weekends and also havent even used the heating so gas used is only to heat water and for cooking (which I must admit isnt even once a day).
Any tips on how I can change this amount etc?
    Thanks!!

Provide the supplier with an actual meter reading

Read you meter and do the calculations regularly for at least 6 weeks.
Then phone up and explain that if you needed a savings account you would go to a bank.
You must know your facts as you clearly don't at the moment.
