Ikea delivery

My son and partner are due to move into an unfurnished flat in exactly 11 days time. How straightforward is it to order a flat's worth of furniture from Ikea online and get it delivered on move-in day?

I've never had a problem with Ikea turning up on time, the risk is more likely to be that they don't get the keys on time. So I'd have thought it safer to aim for delivery on a subsequent date.

Never had any trouble with Ikea deliveries. As above, make sure you order it for a time after they're picking up the keys. If they're buying (rather than renting) then bear in mind they may not get the keys until late in the day, so delivery the following day is probably safer.

Also bear in mind it all needs assembling so allow time for that!

Got a 650kg delivery coming to our new house tomorrow - and the house is down a very narrow lane so we had to phone them after ordering to tell them to use a small truck. :D

Fairly straightforward if they have everything in stock.

There are people that will go for Ikea for you, stock up everything you want and deliver, it may also work out cheaper. (There are even people who will collect, deliver and assemble)

I think the problem occurs if not everything is available, then you may need to choose between taking what is available or waiting or scheduling 2 deliveries.

How much do they NEEDNEEDNEED on that first day? Even just an airbed will do for one night.

An easy car-load, then arrange delivery for later.

I would never do this for a good reason.

I prefer to get a feeling for a house and never know where anything will go until I actually start living and working in it.

I have been in this hose for 10 months and have moved so much around from one place to another then actually selling some bits because they don't look right

I'd just have a few basics for a few days after they get the keys and then wait and see

My experience is a bit different (in a bad way) from the other posters. Fortunately it wasn't anything critical and it was just the frustration/annoyance that came with the process.

We were due some storage and more crucially curtain rails on the day after we got the keys (we moved in about a week later from rented). I got text message confirming the delivery two days in advance. At the day of delivery I got a similar text from Ikea with the same time slot, but crucially a date 10 days from then (I didn't notice the date at the time).

Waited for the full 4 hours window expecting the delivery wasting my time. When it didn't show I called Ikea, after 55min on-hold I got in touch with the customer service. Turns out they singlehandedly rescheduled the delivery because on minor item of the 20+ in the order was missing, didn't even bother to check with us if the date/time is suitable or whether we are happy to proceed with the delivery of only the available items. Just send us the text with the new delivery date and that was it. The person on the phone was borderline arrogant/condescending, saying something in the line of "though s**t, take it or leave it".

The end result is that we spend a couple of nights with no curtains, but it could have been worse I guess.

Bottom line is - don't rely on deliveries for anything critical in the first several nights in a new property. No matter who the supplier is.

Ikea deliveries tend to be scheduled quite a while in advance, so if they're doing it, they should get on with it.

I have ordered a 3 bed house worth of stuff to arrive at the same time and had no issue on the day!

Returning stuff via their website customer service is a nightmare. I have never had such shocking service from a company. Thankfully the people in-store are actually helpful.

The 2 times I ordered from them, it came through on the scheduled date with no issues.

My sister has a scheduled delivery yesterday, she received an order confirmation and a message to confirm the delivery date - but it never arrived. She contacted them, and they said there was an issue with the order and she can reschedule for another day.

I think babyblade has a good point however. It's not just getting a feel for the place before purchasing furniture, it's also being certain that what you've ordered will fit. Nothing more frustrating than finding you've spent a rake of money on something that, when assembled, means you can't open or close the door... and I've been there...:(

Thanks for the advice, everyone. They have come to the conclusion that it's too iffy to organise a delivery.

In any case, we have some furniture they can have, so they are going to get a van to move that. Then they can just go to Ikea and pick up what they need from there.

And, yes, we have an airbed!
