    You picked strange examples.
If you dont want services for your properties using the road then arrange for them to terminate/service a point before the unadopted road starts.

If I'm reading this right, it sounds like the lane is used as a "rat run" by everyone, as it gives better/safer access to the main road. But only 2 houses are actually ON this road.

    Is this correct?
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Not helpful but just my experience.
I am in exactly the same position. Shocking condition road and is supposed to be maintained by all who live on the street but no one would ever pay for drains unblocking let alone the road fixing around here, so we have no chance of fixing it up.

All the trucks delivering to people and the bin men made it worse, to a point that the bin men won't go all the way down now as it is so bad and we have to wheel our bins half way up the road (still on the unadopted road)

I would never live on an unadopted road again.

My parents house fronted onto an unadopted lane along with other houses. They had a resident's association- everyone paid annually into the pot for maintenance of the lane. I realise that only works if everyone is prepared to pay ball and that your situation is a bit different but I think you're quite right to try to get everyone together to see what can be done.

Buy a 4x4, Or stump up the money to tailgate a load or 2 of stone on the worst parts, hopefully you can convince Everyone to chip in.

Yes, I think the OP is saying they don't need to use it, or have any right to use it. Maybe it should just be shut off to stop it being worn out...

Or dump the stone in a pile at one end and see what happens.
  • How many household might reasonably constitute the "we" ?

Sounds like a Road Association is the way to go. Get a quote for how much to patch it up and divide by the hosueholds. Bet it will be cheaper than a replacement tyre or alloy wheel!

I'm so sorry, I hadn't realise there were all these replies. Yes, Sea Shell is correct, the lane is a rat run used by around 20 properties on the road beyond it, but only 2 properties front it.

I've spoken to a few residents since my first post and while some are keen to do their bit towards maintaining it, others are still adamant that it's the Council's responsibility especially as council wagons are more likely to be causing damage than ordinary cars.

I think we've reached stalemate with it for now. Perhaps over winter when the potholes are really likely to grow, people will change their minds and join together as a group to sort it out. Let's hope so.

Really appreciate all your thoughts though, thank you so much.
  • This might be completely off the mark but why not find how much it will cost to bring it up to an adoptable standard & then get the Council to adopt it?

Thanks. Yes we did look into this but the council said that whatever we did to the road, even if perfect condition, they would not adopt it. They don't have a single spare penny for anything. And to them, the "proper entrance" is good enough so why should they. They don't experience the danger at all.
